Someone told me that these electric vehicle cars weigh a lot more than most cars. So if you hit one in a regular car , like a small Hyundai accent. The accent will be totaled and demolished and the EV will be standing unscathed. Reading up on death valleys deaths this year . One guy dies going to the restroom from heat and another dudes car couldn’t pump out cold enough air and he passed out at the wheel after pulling over and then baked to death in his car.
the trails around death Valley have warning signs at them but people still love the challenge. Thing is, if they call for help, ain’t no one gonna go to help them. The rescue helicopter can’t get fly in the heat, airs too thin or something. People that go to Death Valley are either stupid as fuck or on a suicide mission.

it’ll be a lot less cool if it turns out that you need a megawatt-plus wondercharger to hit those marks, and pay $100 a charge.

Assuming a 200-kWh battery and “better than industry average” 5 miles per kWh, that’s still $70 a full charge from home, without paying the charging-station markup. I pay less to go a mile in my gasser, at $4.59(9) a gallon.

Dammit guys: the way forward is efficiency.

The average American commute is under 50 miles a day and probably a few hundred miles for the occasional road trip with an occasional fast charge for longer trips. Another advantage of home charging is slower charging rates overnight leading to longer battery life.

I am thinking about purchasing a generator for my apartment In case all power goes out and I need to run my portable a/c and fridge. Any suggestions? Don’t want to break the bank .

Let’s please stop invoking “the average commute”. I am not interested in the average-commute numbers; those can be satisfied by today’s low-rangers.

These are the kind of commute I’m talking about, and a 250-mile nominal range won’t do, especially when you append shopping or the pre- (or post-) commute school run.


Let’s talk LA to Denver without spending $100 and a few hours at some intermediate charge-pirate.

My ‘13 Fit currently has 51.4 mpg indicated. That’s with CA gas that is 10% dead weight. I drive slowly “as if I had to pay for my fuel”. I’ll also drive a little extra to avoid stop signs. Those are mpg vampires.

It is pretty flat in my corner of the desert, and yet when I do mountains I get an avg. 2mpg improvement. I think I’m spending more time in the BSFC sweet spot of that 1.5. It really needs a sixth gear so that at 55 I’m turning 1600rpm and not 2250.

(add) locally bottom tier is $.33/kWh

My husband was able to get our Hyundai accent up to 61 mpg on a long road trip from SW Colorado across New Mexico. I tried to keep it up but I couldn’t. It fell to 58 mpg. I have no idea how the hell he did it. We were driving the same speed . Could it be because he has a size 13 foot?

Your fit is only 1 model year newer then mine ( is it hybrid?)but i deliver pizza for a living so get closer to 28mpg lol way to go with the granpa driving but are you realy paying $0.45/kwh?
While the EV batteries are expensive the motors are not there is so much that gose into making a combustion engien work that is either lessoned or eliminated with EVs less cooling, filtering, air movement, lubercation, with a net reduction in maintance.
Now if we could shove a larger charge in moderen hybrids and change thier program so they spend more time on thier elecric motor we could be getting like 120mpg with what we have now.
My moms camery hybrid dose about 35 hiway and i can stay better then 40 up to 50 in the city. Know some prius drivers say they get 65mpg highest claim ive heard. Ive learned to push a lot out of the electric motor but just a few simple progaming adjustments im sure that could improve at least 50%
If you had to push just a little harder on the gas to trigger the switch to gas would be huge, a manual switch to shut down either motor independantly would be awsome. Its really difficult to switch back to the electric motot once your on gas.

Its not the speed but how you get there. Coming off those mountains you got to learn how to let momentum and gravity work for ya. A tiny bump of gas gose a long way down hill but it takes a chugg to do anything going up.
If he drove down and you drove up i would say your 58 is more impressive then his 61

No; it’s not a hybrid. It is the manual, and I had to shop for a year before I found one such. The EPA numbers are 28/35, so I’m pretty smug about my numbers. I’m sure they’d be a whole ‘nother thing if I were delivering pizza against the “20 minutes or it’s free” threat.

I did shop the Prius at the time, and (ignoring the several other things I disliked about it) it was twice the cost out the door. A back-of-napkin calculation using EPA mileage and the then-price of $3.50 a gallon had me at breakeven at about 500 thousand miles.

But I really do wonder what real-life mpg I’d be able to get from a Prius.* That car would be great with a 6-speed manny tranny and a 1.0 three-cylinder turbodiesel. Nice dreams.

*When I had a 3-series BMW I was unable to outperform the EPA mpg of 21 by more than 2mpg, and I really tried. So these things aren’t linear. I got lucky with the Fit.

I would be smug af about those numbers too
On flat ground i can get the hybrid up to about 30mph without kicking in the gas motor. You would absoulty kill it in a hybrid! Dont think they got manuals for them though.

I’ve since looked it up. There was a Fit/Jazz hybrid, but afaik it did not come to the States. I also could not find efficiency numbers for it.

The “next car” of my dreams is this. Living in the Mojave, I wager I can do most of my driving on the built-in solar. They claim ten miles per kWh. It makes my nerd gland rhythmically contract.

2 women hikers found dead from heat in the fire state park north of Las Vegas. One found dead on the trail, the other body was in the canyon. Record breaking heat killls hiker dead year for sure.

I prefer heat to cold, but at no point did I get the impulse to step out (for longer than the 30 seconds to take out the trash, and remark on the sledgehammer sensation of all that heat) and commune with 118 degrees not even counting the sun.

No way I could live where you do. I'm dying here when it's only 83F and my wall mounted fan is blowing at me. Dries my eyes out so f'n bad I don't know what's worse. Trying to tie up some jigs to catch me some walleye and end up almost blind by the time I get one done.

Almost got the wife talked into blowing a grand on a portable A/C unit that I can use downstairs in the winter to grow pot and we can use in the living room in the summer. A 2 hose one about 12,000 BTU or so ought to do it. Bad time to find a deal on one tho. :)

I’m mentally scarred from parents who did not heat much in winter but ran the a/c to supernova in summer. Fuuuuucking Teutons.

Mini splits don't work so well at -30C and colder plus I need to be able to relocate it twice a year thus the need for a portable unit.

I've never lived in a house with A/C and the car I have now is the first one with half decent A/C and it's a 2008. It's only been the couple years here that we have felt the need for A/C more than a couple weeks in the summer and now it's freakin hotter all May than what June is but it's stayed pretty hot for us this year since the start of May. The wife's garlic is almost ready to start cropping and I she brought me in 3 pea pods for my lunch today. :)

Since a mini split is usually used to cool, its poor operation at minus thirty is something I think of as “not a problem”.

Here in the hot corner of North America it’s been an exceptional July. I dread August.
