I'm not sure but it looks like maybe they're slowing down on the expansive growth?? They're beginning to intimidate me. Soooooo big.20230729_114117.jpg

I got my new set of bbq/vinegar sauces and rubs from Killer Hogs! But today, I'm spending the entire afternoon cooking pork hocks into osso bucco.

I've torn down all my basil and sown new lettuce leaf basil seeds for fall crops. My gold zucchini has been hit by squash borers just about immediately after removing the row cover and I'm wondering if I should just slay the vines and plant lettuce or mustard greens (bok choy, choy sum) there.

This heat has my girls so angry. Hot and spicy chickens!! I took this cute video of Onyx taking big offense to me pouring water. On the aside, I got my final diagnostics report from the U of M and they again found nothing and I get to live with having killed my babies for nothing, and with having no answers to my mystery disease. But, no one has been sick since I put the sick chicks down, so I'm trying to take a breath and relax on the whole issue.

I planted gai lan (Chinese broccoli) for the first time this year, now it's my favorite and I must have more.. My garden is the best its been in years, must be the putrid weather we have this summer, although today is highly acceptable!20230729_143121.jpg20230729_143037.jpg

I’m in the far northeast (NB, Canada). Never heard of Zerotol….I’ll check it out. It sounds a lot like H202.

I switch to Greencure (potassium bicarbonate) during flower. It manages PM but doesn’t eradicate it and requires regular applications. Seems like Zerotol might be the better mousetrap.

It is a beautiful day today, almost sad I'm not outside smoking another rack of ribs. But, today's meal will be a fresh new thing. I don't suppose you know where I can get pork knuckles with the skin on, I wanted to make schweinshaxe but rear skinless hocks was the best I could find.

Are those eggplants? Moussaka??

I love osso bucco but I thought it was made from shanks, not hocks. There are local butchers down here in Dakota, Rice counties who could definitely set you up.

Those are listada di gandia eggplants, they are a creamy and delicate variety that grow to a pound at most, perfect for a 2 person household! We've had 2 already and we probably don't need 6 plants but our neighbors gladly accept our overflow.

Plants are looking good! Had some excitement today. Large bird of prey had a rooster down in the front yard. Old lady says it was an immature eagle. May have been since we did see a mature bald eagle just a mile or two away. Anyway, I ran out the door and yelled and he flew off. The rooster was in shock but eventually seemed okay. What a homestead adventure.

I sent hubby to Grundhofer's for pork knuckle. This is a challenging cut to find. I've been to four grocers looking so far, and the words "knuckle", "ham", "pork", "shank" and "hock" are all used in labeling and so far, none correct. The cut I have looks like leg knuckles not arm knuckles. And they are skinless. I could have smoked these, and used them for southern style bean dishes or split pea soup. I wasn't sure what to do, but the lack of skin really limited me, and I decided to give osso bucco a chance with them.20230729_152154.jpg
