Nicky Haley at least admitted AGW is real and refused to commit to the parties hard line stance on abortion. That gave me some hope that civil discord and compromise between parties is possible in our future.Nonevent, and will be swept away by today's Trump indictment. It will provide some good ad material for Biden though, they all raised their hands in support of Trump, climate change denial and abortion restrictions, so they covered all the high points!

They will need a number 2 to take over from Trump and besides, things can change between now and the convention. Trump could be in jail or prison and still get the nomination, but it will be well known by the primaries that he would be disqualified from the ballot using the 14th amendment. The republicans will try to use it themselves first when the date to file the papers to run in the state primary comes around but might not succeed. The courts may address it right then and there by saying he can run in the primaries but is disqualified from the general election when they make their first ruling.
If they are stupid enough to nominate Trump and are allowed to do it, then the republican party will be left high and dry on the eve of the election and will concede it to the democrats with no other candidate. We will see, get popcorn because it will be undiscovered country, Donald will be in a cell during a lot of it.

I dont think America will gaol a former prez- esp one who is running.
Imagine if the US president is elected from his gaol cell.
His pocket pardon (if he has one) hasn't come into play yet. Perhaps that card might play out a few weeks or months before the election. He could wave it around at his rallies and get his supporters all enraptured.

Like I said, they could be signing their death warrants, I wouldn't blame Joe for shooting them for shear fucking stupidity! A POTUS can pardon everybody except himself, he could order someone to do it, but would be guilty of murder along with them when out of office. Then again he would never be out of office, since he could just openly kill all his opponents and rivals, like Putin, but more openly. He could be impeached but might show up in congress with a machine gun before they get around to it!
You can see the problems with self pardoning.

Not really but by then the election result may of been decided and if trump is the victor then what would it all matter?
I could see Trumps Chief justices of The Supreme court deciding to look at said case and do what they tend to do.

There are subtitle differences between conservatives and magats, most conservative justices are federalist society members and they are originalists, kinda like religious fundamentalists. They also have no wish to commit suicide, the likes of Trump would shoot them outside the courthouse in their robes, if he could. All the democratic institutions that could challenge him would be on his enemies list and the courts would be at the top of it along with the free press.

While DIY is somewhat painting in day-glo, the basic point remains that allowing self-pardon capacity would be destructive of “checks and balances”, a mechanism that is already strained by both Congress and Scotus, notably its mercenary members.
