Parts of your story sounds like my family lol in Minnesota ?That's the stuff! Always started with the textiles, like curtains or carpets. Terrifying the first time, then part of the magic carpet ride.
I kind of like mushrooms, just keep you sparkly ..
My contact had to flee suddenly, he had unrelated priors attempted murder terrorism etc.
Used to shoot people in the kneecaps that they didn't like. "Don't trust a guy with a limp" was their motto.
Then had a hit squad with weapons get caught at the border with his name and phone number. That was a fun day getting interrogated...

It was terrible this year at our place. And they used different sized tines on some greens and insufficient sand. Prolonged drought and extreme heat didn't help

Just got back from a yard sale by a book dealer who just moved to town. Mostly trash but I picked up a decent 1956 1st edition of Pearl S. Buck's Imperial Woman. I went up to his table and introduced myself, told him I'm a collector and what I like (19th c. Chinese and Japanese stuff and related western stuff). Giving him a wishlist tomorrow. And he waved off me paying for the Buck novel, not worth much but worth more than he wanted.
Got home and pulled my new volume out for a look and noticed a bookmark. 2 crisp Chinese banknotes printed in 1999! I'm rich! Like 10 cents richer! It's like playing penny slots lol.
