The speaker in parliament just keeps order and does not lead a faction or determine what gets voted on etc. He/she is non partisan or suppose to be, like a judge using the rule book of parliament, like a moderator here.

My post above is one sided and angry, but that isn't the whole story as far as my opinion is concerned. So, if I can clarify, I do realize that the Ukrainians were under Stalin's boot for years and people will do things during war that isn't particularly part of their real constitution or character. I did grow up in Germany and have a good perspective on how they felt after the war and the truth of what happened.
I'm actually more pissed off that this wasn't properly vetted, reports on the last Nazi or not. The evening before I posted, I said this to my daughter who asked me what I thought. She was actually surprised at the seemingly softer stance I would normally take when it comes to this. Especially if this Ukrainian fellow did regret what he was part of at the time. I hold no grudge towards the person fighting for his country in the heat of the shit storm. My own family probably would have taken the same course if we were in Ukraine at the time. There's a lot of gray area here.

I don't recall taking the PM to task on the Nazi embarrassment, but of course I believe that ANY leader is responsible for the actions of his team. I just want to clarify that my comments about judging character were about Anthony Rota, not towards anyone that was/is a Nazi. It's not for me to judge if that person(Nazi) warrants forgiveness or how harsh he deserves to be punished. I don't know anything about him so I can't speak to that. I don't know what I would have done if I was in his position; I'd like to believe that I would have acted in a particular way, but that's easy to think when I've never come close to experiencing anything like that. I hear what you're saying and can't disagree.
It appears that Mr. Rota did understand that the only way he could prove that he was worthy of being the speaker was to step down. It was an embarrassing moment, but he proved he was honorable.

Call me crazy, but when the leader of the country is being attacked vociferously by the leadership of Russia, China, and India; he's doing something right. Anyone that is willing to believe that Zelensky is a Nazi because of what happened was going to believe anything Russia says anyway. Justin you are right about native Canadians, but YOU had better start listening to Canadians about the housing shortage and food inflation, that affects native Canadians too, as well as the rest of us. If they don't get a handle on it, we will have a tory government and the same problems as Americans. Already tory provinces are attacking the LBGTQ community and threatening to use the notwithstanding clause in the constitution over energy policy and human rights.

The Speaker is elected by a secret ranked-ballot, meaning MPs list the candidates in order of preference. If nobody wins on the first ballot, the last-place candidate is dropped and their votes are redistributed until someone claims a majority.
Electing a Speaker by secret ballot is a relatively new process. Up until the mid-1980s, the Speaker was nominated by the prime minister and MPs simply gave a rubber-stamp approval.
The first election by secret ballot took place on Sept. 30, 1986 — almost exactly 37 years before the day that MPs will elect a new Speaker to replace Rota. Ironically, the Speaker who was replaced on that occasion was also the last before Rota to step down mid-session.

I'm not an expert on housing policy, but the government did it before and perhaps they can do it again, it is a problem that must be addressed, and it is one of the factors in their decline at the polls. I can assure you of one thing PeePee and the Tories won't address it with tax cuts for the rich, we can always cut taxes for the rich, but if we raise them and off to America they go with the cash. Until American fiscal policy changes ours is in a vice with about the same wealth distribution as the Americans and wealth distribution is the root of the problem.
