Taiwan unveils first domestically made submarine
Taiwan launched its first domestically-produced submarine into the ocean on Thursday, a landmark achievement for the nation’s shipbuilding industry as it ramps up preparedness against a conflict versus China.
The reduced-size submarine will begin tests this week.
“In the past, a domestic-made submarine was considered impossible, but today a submarine designed and built by our countrymen is in front of you,” President Tsai Ing-wen said at the launch ceremony, reported by The Associated Press.
“Building a submarine is the concrete realization of our resolution to protect our country,” she said. “Submarines are an important piece of equipment for the Taiwan navy to develop asymmetric combat power in terms of strategy and tactics.”
The submarine project was urged on the U.S., which has pushed Taiwan to advance its domestic military preparedness while also increasing its military support.
If tests are successful, a second submarine will be built and both deployed by 2027, according to Taiwanese state media.
Tensions between China and Taiwan and have ratcheted up in recent years as relations between Beijing and the U.S. have faltered.
China has launched a number of close-call aircraft and naval raids just off Taiwan’s coast in recent months, threatening the island nation.
China’s Defense Ministry on Thursday said the submarine’s construction was Taiwan “heading down the path of its own destruction.”
“No matter how many weapons the Democratic Progressive Party buys, it will not obstruct the greater trend of reunification with the motherland,” said Col. Wu Qian, a spokesperson in China’s Ministry of National Defense, according to AP.

I don't think China is in any shape to invade anybody for a while, and Joe is ringing them in with allies just has been done with the old USSR. If they can build the worlds most advanced microprocessors, then they can leverage a host of other tech stuff too. A lot of the electronics companies in China are Taiwanese owned, like foxconn, which is moving more trade to India and Vietnam. If anybody could make an AI driven Hell with drones and missiles coming down like rain on the invading Chinese, it would be the Taiwanese.

They are also cooperating with other allies in the region like South Korea and Japan on defensive systems and could market such systems to each other, then there is the help and support Uncle Sam can provide. Joe is busy with alliances, even if he has to hold his hand over his nose with India and he is talking to Vietnam too, who have their own border issues with China. There are plenty of countries in the region interested in defensive preparations against Chinese aggression, the Chinese brought it on themselves with imperialist ambitions, just like the Russians.

They were worried about China for a while and this is now part of a bigger more recent defense initiative. Ukraine demonstrated that powers like Russia can be defeated or beaten off with the help of allies and Taiwan has made themselves indispensable to every advanced nation with chip manufacture. I'm surprised they aren't buying attack subs from America or even Sweden or Germany, they need to work in the straits of Tiawan and to stop any potential blockade. One way to do this would be to mine their own waters with torpedo like mines that lurk on the bottom waiting for Chinese military acoustic signature to come in range and then attacked when they get the acoustic signal to do so. They can also have cables with microphones and emitters and have their surrounding waters wired for sound and to communicate with lurking very smart mines that are more like torpedoes or drones.
In any case I don't think China wants the world of hurt it would get by invading Tiawan, both militarily and economically, the fate of Russia is a warning to Xi. China is suffering from economic challenges among other serious internal issues and the last thing they need is for their trade to be cut off and under sanctions. Then again, I didn't think Vlad would be stupid enough to attack Ukraine and was pleasantly surprised at how shitty, ineffectual and corrupt his military was.
