McConnell: ‘Practically impossible’ to pass Ukraine funding before Christmas
Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) told reporters Tuesday that it will be “practically impossible” to pass legislation providing more military aid to Ukraine before Christmas and urged President Biden to get more involved in the stalled negotiations.
“All I have said is [it’s] practically impossible, even though we reach an agreement, to craft it, get it through the Senate, get it through the House before Christmas,” McConnell said. “Doesn’t mean it’s not important.”

McConnell noted Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) has “said to a number of people” that the House is leaving town at the end of this week, which means that even if Senate negotiators strike a deal on border security, House lawmakers wouldn’t be around to consider it until January.
The GOP leader said Biden needs to get more involved in the discussions, alluding to complaints by Senate Republicans that the White House has given the lead GOP negotiator, Sen. James Lankford (R-Okla.), the run-around by continually deferring major points of the negotiation to Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), the lead Senate Democratic negotiator.

McConnell said he has told Biden directly that “the only way we’ll get an agreement is for you to be involved. Don’t just punt the ball up to Senate Democrats — they may never get there.”
“We all know he’s the only one that can sign a bill into law,” McConnell said of Biden. “Without him, there is no deal.”
McConnell said he’s urged both Biden and White House chief of staff Jeff Zients to take a more hands-on role in the negotiation.
“I’ve talked to [Biden] about it. I’ve talked to Zients about it. [There’s] some indication last night that maybe they’re going to finally engage rather than just sending James Lankford and his team back to Senate Democrats,” he said.

“To sum it up, there won’t be a deal until Joe Biden and Republicans reach an agreement. That hasn’t happened yet. I hope that it will, because I think this whole package is important to our country and I’d like to see it pass,” he said of Biden’s $106 billion emergency foreign aid request to fund Ukraine, Israel, the Indo-Pacific region and provide humanitarian aid to Gaza.
McConnell, however, acknowledged “it’s not going to be easy” to pass the foreign aid package if it lags until January and then gets caught up in negotiations over a long-term government funding bill.
Funding for federal departments and agencies expires Jan. 19 and Feb. 2.

McConnell made his comments hours after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met with senators in the Capitol to ask Congress to fund another round of military aid to help Ukraine fight off Russia’s invasion.
Zelensky also met with Johnson on Tuesday morning and was set to hold a joint press conference with Biden after a meeting at the White House in the afternoon.

The Sarasota County, Florida, School Board passed a resolution Monday night calling for the resignation of board member Bridget Ziegler, the wife of state Republican Party chairman Christian Ziegler, who is under investigation of allegations of rape and sexual battery.

The move, which passed on a 4-1 vote with Bridget Ziegler in opposition, is nonbinding, but it was a significant bipartisan showing against Ziegler, a high-profile conservative activist.

It is the latest development in a round of blowback to the investigation into Christian Ziegler, which was made public this month. Some board members expressed interest in sending a letter asking Gov. Ron DeSantis to remove her from office, but the board declined to vote on that matter.

Ziegler called the resolution “toothless” but spoke only sparingly ahead of the vote, which took place before the time for members of the public to speak, which was expected to last hours.

Bridget Ziegler, a co-founder of Moms for Liberty — a group that works to elect conservative women to school boards and pushes conservative policies in schools — has played a prominent role in Florida Republican politics in recent years, including having been endorsed in her re-election campaign by DeSantis.

“It is the distraction de jour in the long list of distractions that has kept the board drama-focused instead of student centric-focused,” said board member Tom Edwards, a Democrat, who suggested sending the letter to DeSantis.

Sarasota police are investigating allegations that Christian Ziegler raped a woman in early October in her Sarasota apartment, a politically explosive sex scandal that involves Bridget Ziegler even though she is not accused of any wrongdoing.

The Zieglers were planning on having a consensual sexual encounter with the alleged victim, whom the couple have known for 20 years. The woman tried to cancel once she was informed that Bridget would not be participating, but Christian still went to the woman’s apartment and then raped her, authorities allege. The details were contained in a search warrant affidavit that was first reported by the Florida Center for Government Accountability and shared with NBC News.

Sarasota police have not confirmed or denied the authenticity of the affidavit, which has been widely reported.

Christian Ziegler contacted the woman via social media after the incident, and she told him it was “not okay” what happened, according to the affidavit. He responded by saying, “Oh. That’s not good. You are my friend. Known ya for like twenty years now. Lol.”

Ziegler has not been formally charged and has maintained his innocence, but there have continued to be widespread calls for him to resign as chairman of the Florida GOP, including from DeSantis, Sen. Rick Scott and all of the state’s Republican legislative leaders.

The Republican Party of Florida leadership is holding an emergency meeting this Sunday in Orlando to consider disciplinary actions that could include taking away Ziegler’s salary and reducing his role in the party. They can not remove Ziegler from his role as chairman at the meeting.

Bridget Ziegler is not accused of any wrongdoing, but she has still faced backlash, including calls for her to resign from the school board. She already resigned from her as vice president of school board programs at the Leadership Institute, an organization that teaches conservatives to run for office.

Ziegler has also faced criticism from those who have said she is a hypocrite because she has advocated a far-right agenda that has included being publicly against the LGBTQ community — including helping craft legislation that banned the discussion of sexual orientation or gender identity in classrooms up until third grade. Supporters said the bill was about parental empowerment, while opponents dubbed it “Don’t Say Gay.”

During the public comment period at Tuesday's school board meeting, attendee Joyce Peralta said she didn't care what consensual sexual activities Bridget Ziegler had engaged in.

“I do care," she added, "about the campaign of hate that Bridget was happy to lead as she trained school board candidates nationwide."

When Donald Trump’s allies signed false documents claiming he won several states he lost — and that they were his legitimate presidential electors — they came armed with an excuse: Democrats did it first, 60 years earlier in Hawaii.

By December 1960, it was clear Kennedy had won. Only Hawaii’s result remained in doubt. Nixon had prevailed by just 140 votes, according to the initial results, which were certified by the governor. A recount was underway on Dec. 19, 1960, when presidential electors across the nation were required by law to meet and cast their ballots.


Nixon’s Hawaii electors met and cast their three votes in an official ceremony. But nearby, Kennedy’s three elector nominees gathered and signed their own certificates, delivering them to Washington as though Kennedy had won the state.

IMO, Sen Johnson knew the answer to Collins' question, but didn't say "Hawaii" because then he would have been caught in a lie. By refusing to provide that detail, he kept the smokescreen intact. Republican truthers can point at the "Hawaii" fake excuse as if it were true, just like they do with other Trump half-truths and right wing myths. If he had named that state, then he'd have to face the reason why there is no equivalence between what happened in Hawaii and Wisconsin:

the Hawaii Democrats used virtually the same language that the false Trump electors in five states used in their effort to upend the 2020 race. In those documents — from Arizona, Nevada, Michigan, Wisconsin and Georgia — the pro-Turmp activists described themselves as “duly elected and qualified.” In two other states, Pennsylvania and New Mexico, Trump allies submitted alternative elector slates but included a caveat: their votes would only be counted if ongoing court battles broke in favor of Trump.

Although the three Democratic electors in Hawaii took the same action — signing false certificates — it does not appear they ever faced similar scrutiny, in part because of what happened next. Namely, that Hawaii’s recount ultimately did reverse the state’s election outcome.
Kennedy prevailed by an eyelash when the recount concluded on Dec. 28, 1960. A new governor certified the Kennedy victory and transmitted a new slate of Electoral College certificates — signed by the same three Democrats who falsely claimed to have won two weeks earlier.

One crucial feature of the 1960 episode is that a state court weighed in Dec. 30, 1960, a week before Nixon oversaw the electoral vote count.

Judge Ronald Jamieson agreed that the certified Kennedy electors were legitimate. His judgment was then affirmed by the state’s sitting governor, who certified the Democratic slate and transmitted it to Congress. Jamieson also reportedly threw out an effort by the GOP electors to scrap the entire election because of fraud allegations.


Robertson weaseled his way through that interview and by doing so, promoted the excuses used to continue the Big Lie by claiming he "couldn't recall" an important detail. A detail that would have proven him to be lying. In MAGA land, remaining silent and looking like a fool instead of opening their mouth to remove all doubt it is a politically winning strategy.
