My recommendation would be to start two plants. Worst case scenario, youll get one female (hopefully). With 50/50 odds for a female and only 1 plant, it sure would suck to get a dude. For growing one plant under CFLs in my closet, I was originally thinking I could do it for under $100?? Are fertilizers absolutely necessary if im not looking for huge yeilds the first go around? Im just looking for enough to keep me happy for a little while, until I can atleast get another one into flowering.
My set up I am about to make is basically 8 CFL's (2 each in 4 of those aluminum utility light clamps) with an oscillating fan in my closet, which is 36" x 40". I am planning on buying the smallest thing of some decent soil (I was originaly thinking MG but I keep reading on here that is bad? so I was thinkin Scotts or something else??) I would also have to buy a decent extension cord, and a big pot to grow in. I think I can manage without a timer for the lights for this first grow.
I am kinda worried about the pH kit....is this an absolute necessity? I was thinking I can manage without it, and let tap water sit out for a day or 2 before I use it.
During the veg stage, I was going to make one of the buckets with water and febreze in it for smell. Anything else that I have to have to grow a single plant?
I would for SURE get a timer when you flower, you can buy them at CVS for $8.00. The plant needs pretty steady 12 hours of light, screwing around with it will get you a hermie.
For the pH... if youre on ground water, youll probably be alright without worrying about it too much. If youre on city water, your water will have chlorine in it, which is bad for plants, especially newly sprouted ones. Youll at a minimum want to let the water sit out for 24hours before watering so the chlorine can evaporate.
If you want to use no nutes at all, then I would (contrary to most people) recommend a MG soil. The MG soil shouldnt be too harsh for a sprout, and will continue to feed the plant for its entire life. That is the reason why people dont like MG- because it already has nutes in it, and makes it more difficult to add your own nutes. If you arent planning on using nutes, MG would be a good choice, IMO.
You will also want to buy a decent thermometer/humidity guage. Essential information to have.
