Trying to understand them is generally a quieter and much more introspective process than building cartoonish scenarios based almost entirely by listening to “pundits” on video.

The point of my response to the bit I bolded is that it was an example of a facile statement betraying the application of sloppy logic to the limited and over processed dataset you get from masters of the video soundbite.

Maga is a new phenomenon in that, while it may be considered a new spin on old ideologies, it incorporates enough unique ideas, emphases and history to be its own thing. A newt and an ape are not the same thing, even though they both are terrestrial tetrapods.

That media normalization thing is a tier-1 Problem. The most powerful tool we have against creeping or leaping fascism is a clear-eyed mainstream media calling the plays as or soon after they happen.

Others and I have commented on this before. The large and trusted media outlets need to call a spade a spade in a timely manner.
