With experience comes age, or, better said, people who are good at their job and are allowed to do it for a long time, they get older and gain valuable experience. Should we really use an arbitrary number instead of some other signs of decline, such as poor decision making or other objective criteria rather than something that does not really indicate how an individual is holding up over time?I’m not crazy about either candidate from an age perspective and have real concerns about how we in the US have an aging problem in our government as a whole. but cognitive ability no not really, but who knows. we gotta get people like Grassley, McConnell, Feinstein, Pelosi, Biden, Trump, etc, etc. outta office earlier and I would be in favor of a max age restriction at time of the election that matched the retirement age published by the IRS or something. Our population should be represented better from an age perspective. Right now I think the average age of a senator is like 58 with the average American being 39 and the average adult being 45.
Look at the policies for obtaining a driver's license. People are screened for visual acuity rather than rejected because older people's eyesight tends to decline to the point where some are less safe behind the wheel. Operative words are "tend" and "some" and yes, many older people should not drive but not because they are old.
