Hello all! First indoor grow, seeds were about 5 yrs old, stored in cellophane, inside a Marb box, within a metal tin. Slow first 2 weeks. Then I hit the 3rd week of "OHH FOCK YEAH!" when I'd check on them. Worked out of town for 2 nights and now they got issues. Images attached and facts below.

SETUP+ENVIRONMENT
  • 3 plants in 3 gal fabric pots, 4wks old today
  • Medium ~11.3qts/pot : 55% Jiffy starter(peat moss, coir pith, Lyme, vermiculite), 37% Epsoma Organic Potting Mix, 8% Perlite.
  • Soil PH in each is 6.5-6.7
  • Temp: 72-80(74 most common)
  • Humidity: 48-62(54 most common)
  • Gecilioaran 100watt LED(301H diodes)
  • 32x32x62 tent
  • 4" exhaust fan(130cfm@50%) + carbon filter
NUTES/FOOD
  • Epsoma Organic Starter Plus(4-3-3) was mixed LIGHTLY in soil before potting. Called for 0.75 or 3/4th tbsp. I did 1tsp/quart, little less than half.
  • Alaska Fish Emulsion(5-1-1)
So with all that info, and how I've been lightly feeding them...I just can't figure how in two days that one plant get dark brownish tips. Magnesium deficiency? Any and all opinions welcome! Thanks

EDIT: Some pics uploaded. Main plant that has me confused is the 2nd photo, brown leaves curling down. And they're crispy, and that top fan leaf with the brown n down curly; is almost a muddy color. Not something I ran into before. Usually just yellowing of some kind or multiple droopy days.

Pictures help.
Is there some MB size limit per pic? I thought I uploaded 4. Green bar got to 100%, file name was greyed out and had a line through it with a cancel button to the right

Ahhh my camera was on RAW/DNG so couldn't upload normally. Here's 2 pics this morning.

They act healthy, reaching for the light, which I raised about 5" last night. The 3rd plant which didn't have any rust or orange edges got its first leaf edge spot. My gut keeps saying Magnesium, but still researching. I must say, when the color changes stick to just yellow, pretty easy to pin down what's wrong. Once ya get orange/brown/almost a murkey brown - just throw the cards in the air lol

It could be nitrogen burn bc before i left for 2 days i was told it would 4 days out of town, so i did double their dose of Alaska Fish Emulsion(5-1-1), but i'd also just transplanted them to 3 gal from red cups. So I figured way more soil + the plants being twice the size as when I first started feeding them, that I'd be safe and smart, to up the feed. Soil PH was also reading 7.0 (Rapid test PH only probe, $11 Rural King). Now on all 3 plants, when inserted initially it read 7.3-7.5 for like 1 second, then reverted to 7. So I put the probe just 2-3" in them and it read higher than a read inserted deeper. But idk if they can read that well without the full probe mostly in?? Only my second grow so still learning what's reliable lol

Also just realized PH 7 is high for plain soil, coco/soilless tend to like 5.5-6.5. Going to try some vinegar to get PH down. Also realize I'm talking to myself lol, but hopefully one of you fine viewers will comment

It could be the nutrients being fed too early. If you're doing organic, I wouldn't really worry too much about soil ph unless it's something crazy. Humic acid is a good ph neutralizer.

Sounds like you have a pretty cool setup. Soil looks very wet. Maybe water when the pot feels light. Water to good amount of runoff. Measure runoff Ph. Mathamagically speaking, if your soil was in the sixes and now it is in the sevens, perhaps you might want to bring your feed Ph down a little for the next feed. I did notice the fish emulsion is making your leaves a little dark. Maybe less nitrogen next feed too. Could help with the tip burn.
I'm thinking vinegar will anihilate your beneficials in your soil. I could be wrong. Let me know please. Maybe something a little less harsh like Ph down. What PPMs are you hitting her with? When she's that young, you could hit her with a PPM that is maybe a little closer to what comes out of your tap water. When she's a little more sturdy, you should bump that up a hundo with each feed.
What are you doing about pest control? The wetness of that soil, looks like the perfect breeding ground for fungus gnats. If you're not getting that, keep up the good work.
Your plants look like they'll make it go. Keep up the good work.

So it's wet bc id watered them good bc of the expected 4 days away . I kicked my ass with over watering when they were seedlings - learned you can always add water but can't remove haha.

Thank you for mentioning vinegar potentially killing the micro life in the soil!! Didn't think of that.I do not yet have a PPM meter, not a light intensity reader(tight budget!!!) Haven't seen any nats yet. My 1st and previous grow was outside and I just used neem oil. Worked well, so if I do get any pests that's my go too.

I plan to use vinegar if it won't destroy the micro life. Other than that, only thing I got on hand to lower PH would be coffee?? Don't have any dollars for PH down right now. Honestly was hoping/thinking it would just stay 6.5-6.7 forever :P. Also, all these soil ph readers say in caps "ONLY SOIL!"; not sure how true that is.

I'd say the brown edges and tips is probably the soil mixture. I don't know anything about the 2 soils you mixed but that would be my first guess. It's not Mg deficiency. I'd do plain water for now and see if they get better. The soil might just need some time to balance out. EWC or an EWC tea might help if you have any.

And throw that ph meter away. It's junk. Most of those cheapo ones are. If you got one that actually works I'd be impressed.

1. He's doing organics so runoff isn't a great idea.
2. Runoff also isn't a good way to measure soil pH.
3. Vinegar is a milder acid compared to phosphoric acid which is what most pH down is so it's not going to hurt the microbes unless you use a lot. I don't think phosphoric acid would do much harm either but it's irrelevant since he doesn't need to adjust his pH anyways.

What I do, when a problem like this pops up, is get on the internet. I would type in
" brown splotches on cannabis leaves" . After the search results are in , hit the
" image " button. It will take you to a shit-load of sites dealing with the problem.
These brown splotches are not uncommon among most growers. The leaves in the picture will be cut off in the near future , no loss there. Hopefully, the problem dissapears as the plant matures a little more . Having grown for almost 50yrs, I've seen quite the array of issues ( "comes with the territory). One tip ( I learned the hard way) , don't ever take outdoor plants inside. Ya never know what problems
( eg. bugs, mold ) you're bringing in . Crack on stoner dude !

Thanks, never thought to do the "Images" route on Google. This is only my second grow, and 1st indoors. My first grow was this same bag seed 4-5 years ago and outside. Never got any murky brown or orange discoloration. Sadly I had to harvest almost 4 weeks early bc bud rot.

I also got these fellers for quick on the spot referencing. Even with all that, I still want second opinions haha. Being I didn't get to see the strain's full potential the first time, I'm amped for this grow to find out how bomb it can get. Idk what the strain is, but the buds grow like 40% purple and had the strongest pure evergreen piney scent I've ever smelled on herb.

EDIT: Looking back at my plants, and those image guides, I think I did a nitrogen burn. AND discovered a potential mistake - that Epsoma Organic Starter Plus fert does have 2.4% slow release nitrogen. I only mixed roughly 40% of the amount the bag called for. That combo'd with the double dosage of Fish Emulsion. Time will tell, def don't feel comfortable trying to flush as these babies just got over some stagnant growth from me over watering lol

EDIT 2: This article covers how too low or high pH can affect cannabis. Was a good read and maybe a portion of my issues.

DAMN!!!! another new symptom popping up. This is only on the third/rear plant in the picture.

More research. Haven't watered with the vinegar and epsoms yet. They're still damp 1.5" down.

Well I finally watered them. It's been 9 days, so the medium should be plenty dry. I did 1/2 teaspoon of both vinegar and Epsom salts mixed in about 28oz. Poured slowly, ~10min to empty equally among the 3 plants. I will say the new growth over the last few days has shown less to no bad symptoms. Hoping this little watering will be what they needed!

Also starting to get that MJ smell from them!! Love it
