Mg deficiency ???

Hey y’all,

I started having some issues with my plants a few days ago. Yellowing in the leaves makes me think it’s a Magnesium deficiency, but I wanted to ask to see if anyone can take a look and confirm.

im using a two site stirponics rdwc with outside reservoir. Chiller set to 69f, ph controller set to 5.8, flora trio, I was using tap water at 80ppm, also temps with lights on are 80f. I tried raising the ph up to 6.0, and adding calmag plus at about 1ml per gal (total system is 12gal). i raised the ph yesterday and added the calmag but I think it’s to soon To know if it’s working. I need to do a res change and I’m planning on using RO water, the trio. And calmag tonight after work.

is there anything else y’all would recommend?

I was just dealing with the same thing myself. I use 100% RO and just adding cal-mag wasn't enough. I added a sweet which is primarily Mg and foliar applications of epsom.

As @amneziaHaze noticed, odd that it's showing on the middle leaves and nothing lower.

Yes, but compare individual branches for bottom/top growth, then you see the progression better.
The big leaf in the center is still lower leaf for that branch + it's getting alot of light.
So definatly Mg deficiency like others pointed and it's been progressing for awhile.

Magnesium moves well within the plant so if you have added some it should stop the progressing quite fast.
Some of the leaves will continue to wither and will drop, but that's just because the plant won't really fix damaged parts.

I did a res change last night with RO and 1 tsp per gallon of calmag+, micro, bloom, and gro. I also turned my light down a touch until I see them recovering. i need to flip to 12s soon to avoid them potentially blocking up my 1” rdwc tubing. Hopefully the res change did the trick. All other conditions should be optimal.

im following this chart

RH is around 58-60%
That's good RH for that temperature so the environment is good. Seems like it just needs more Mg.

I think I've read that Mg deficiencies take a while to show up so perhaps it was something out of whack a couple of weeks ago.

"I also turned my light down a touch until I see them recovering." - unless a plant is suffering from too much light, you're reducing the plants' ability to recover because it can't generate as much glucose. As the metabolic rate drops, the entire grown environment changes - reduced metabolism reduces transpiration which means that water uptake drops as does RH.

"Heh, my kid's sick so I took away lunch."

Yea but led lights demand lots of magnesium soo turning it down could be a smart move.
Allsoo do a foliar feed i havent seen if your soil or hydro but it takes some time for plant to take it from the soil

"lots of magnesium" compared to what?

Over the years, I've seen that growers who switch from gas discharge to LED "need to increase Mg" but I can't figure out why. Any chance you can explain why or point to research that demonstrates it?

this is my first hydro grow in an rdwc stirponics system from PA Hydroponics.

I think it’s getting worse. I did a res change last Thursday using RO water, the flora trio, 1 tsp per gallon of calmag+, and 2ml per gallon of hydrogaurd. Turned my light down to about 50%. Water is 68-69F, room temp is 80 lights on, 74 lights off. PH is being controlled at 6.0.

I agree. Some of the leaves that were OK a few days ago aren't looking too good now.

Is 1 tps/gallon the recommended dose for Flora Trio?

What's your EC/PPM? At that stage of growth, my plants are generally at about 1.2 and then up to 1.6 or so in mid-flower.

And you're using the air pump + stones that come with the kit, right?

Your water temp + Hydroguard should hold off root rot but how are the roots looking? They should be white but some of the roots that have been exposed to nutrients will be light to medium brown.

What about "wind"? I see one fan on the bottom of the tent but what about an inline fan to move air through the tent?

Leafs that where damaged will never get better.but new growth should be normal
I personally in hydro do 0.58-1g of epson daily with 300wLed

How foes the water smell is it disqusting or just root smell nozhing bad

Im following this guide for what and when in terms of a feeding schedule. From reading other posts on here as long as you’re using RO water PPMs don’t matter too much if you’re following the chart. I bumped it from half tsp to a full tsp because they were pretty light green, then added calmag+, just grabbed some calimagic, which I‘ll use during my next res change. When I bumped up the concentration to 1 tsp, my PPMs on a .5 scale were around 1120 and I’m not seeing any burning on the leaf tips.

yes, I’m using the air pump and kit that came with the kit. Appears to be working really well.

I think the roots are my problem, and I think it’s because my water level was too high. I looked at my roots and they had some darkish brown clumpy bits of roots that started easily falling off the I touched them. The roots weren’t black and they didn’t smell at all, so I’d be surprised if it was full on root rot. Anyways I gently ran my fingers through the clumps and got rid of anything easily falling off, then washed the remaining roots really well with RO water. I added 6 mls of hydro guard and did not top off my res. I was keeping 4gal of water in each 5gal bucket + external reservoir, which put my water level about 1/3 up on my baskets. I think I’m going to drop the water level to about 3 to 3.5 gal per bucket And try to maintain a 1.5-2” gap under the basket.

Fingers Crossed this works. If not im just going to take some clones, clean, and restart— paying more attention to my water level.

Also for ventilation, I have a fan on the bottom, two oscillating fans on the sides, a fan at the top blowing on my light, then an intake fan thats coming into my tent blowing cooler air from my air conditioning about half way up the tent down to my plants, as well as a 6” exhaust fan at the top pulling air out of the tent and out of the room/house. I’m using a small laundry room that would fit a small stacked washer and dryer, so I’m venting out of the house via the dryer vent.
