Hovsepian notice to airman 911.jpg

“Something is wrong. We are in a rapid descent... we are all over the place. ... I see water. I see buildings. We are flying low. We are flying very, very low. We are flying way too low. ... Oh my God, we are way too low...
Oh my God, we're —”

– Flight attendant Madeline Amy Sweeney describing the hijacking of American Airlines Flight 11 at the end of her phone call to a supervisor. 9/11/2001

"I know you've got a lot in the building but we're up on the top. Smoke rises too. Come on, I can barely breathe now — can't see.
It's really bad, it's black, it's arid....
We're young men. We're not ready to die."

- Kevin Cosgrove, who was on the 105th floor of the South Tower, spoke to the emergency services moments before it collapsed. 9/11/2001

"Numerous civilians in the stairwells, numerous burn victims are coming down.
We're trying to send them down first... we're still heading up. I am on the 44th floor and we have too many burned people with me.
I'm not leaving them!”

- Captain Patrick “Paddy” Brown of Ladder 3 FDNY and his company were climbing the stairwell of the North Tower just half an hour before the first collapse. 9/11/2001

''Hi Mom, this is Mark, We've been taken over. There are three men that say they have a bomb. I love you, I love you, I love you.''
Mark Bingham to his Mother Alice, from onboard United Airlines Flight 93, 9/11/2001, 15 minutes before the Boeing 757 crashed in a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

“Mommy, the building is on fire, there's smoke coming through the walls. I can't breathe.
I love you, Mommy, goodbye.”

Veronique Bowers to her Mother Daphne, calling from the Towers minutes before the collapse, 9:05 AM 9/11/2001

"It's getting bad, Dad. A stewardess was stabbed. They seem to have knives and Mace. They said they have a bomb. It's getting very bad on the plane. Passengers are throwing up and getting sick. The plane is making jerky movements. I don't think the pilot is flying the plane.
I think we are going down. I think they intend to go to Chicago or someplace and fly into a building.
Don't worry, Dad. If it happens, it'll be very fast ... Oh, my God ... oh, my God, oh, my God______________"

Peter Hanson, 32, (flying with his wife, Sue and Christine his 2 year old daughter) – In a phone call to his parents moments before the impact of United Flight 175

"Jack, pick up sweetie, can you hear me? Okay. I just want to tell you, there’s a little problem with the plane. I’m fine. I’m totally fine.
I just want to tell you how much I love you."

Lauren Grandcolas, passenger on United flight 93, telephone message left at 09:39, 11 September 2001. She was pregnant.

"It's up to us. I think we can do it .. “I know we’re all going to die. There’s three of us who are going to do something about it"
Thomas E. Burnett Jr., Thoratec Corporation senior vice president and passenger on United Airlines Flight 93, cell phone call to his wife Deena, 11 September 2001

“We’re going to find out who did this and we’re going after the bastards.”
- Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah - 9/11/2001

"Justice Has Been Done"
President Barack Obama: Announcing the death of Osama bin Laden in a U.S. military operation in Pakistan, May 1, 2011.

John Ballantine Niven, a civilian from Oyster Bay, New York, is the 1,650th person to be identified by the Office of Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) on Jan 18, 2024 through advanced DNA analysis using breakthrough sequencing technology, along with a mitochondrial DNA analysis of remains recovered from the attack that took the lives of 2,753 people. 1103 people remain unidentified. OCME retains 7000 human remains, some so small, they are waiting for technology to advance further before they return to the samples. Many are so small that putting it through another round of testing could mean destroying the last remaining particle(s). bb
