SIP thread -- (Sub-Irrigated Planter)

I (just recently) had one go rancid on me and kill an entire plant... so yeah I am going to wait lol
For my setup, I wait anymore until the plants are big enough to drink fast enough that my water doesn't sit for long. Had some avoidable pH issues at one point. But keep in mind my reservoirs are open to light and air, so they'll grow some shit.

Huh, never had one go rancid (you mean like anaerobic?) but I have had problems transplanting plants that are not well-rooted directly into the SIP. At best they seem overwatered and take forever to get going, at worst I have actually have one die on me.

I started waiting until they're fully rooted in a 3 or 4 inch pot before transplanting, and so far no issues doing it like that.

Depending on res size, water may be sitting for a while.

Personally, if i was going to add water to the res, right off the bat, I wouldn't fill it. My earthbox is ~2 gal. I would maybe try 1 gal to start. Maybe less depending on how long it sits. That's just my opinion though.

it was actually really weird. I had never had it happen before either. The scenario was the plant was really big in the SIP... it was a mom and I took a bunch of clones... I think when I did that I REALLY slowed down the growth and I had just added 2 gallons to the rez... so then with it losing so much vegetation I think it just basically stopped the growth so then the water just sat. then one day it was fine then next it was 100% gone and when I drained the rez it was brown and rancid. so now I know when taking a ton of clones keep the rez dry... and I am now paranoid about water sitting.

I "charge" my SIP's with a gallon from the top the day before transplant.

At transplant I fill the reservoir till about half full and maintain a 1/3 full daily until they drink that in one day.

Then I fill it daily, usually takes a couple of weeks ;)

This is day 30, 12 days from transplant...

Cheers
thanks for the input! I have earthboxes which have a pretty large rez so going to be waiting for a bit I think. I did top water with transplanting also.

I suppose I can give some pics... not much to look at yet but the earthboxes (leaves top dressing them) are autos from night owl and then a couple green crack freebies from North Atlantic. The soil bed is Blue Popz clones I have a mom of from Burning Bush nursery (which I guess are going to be hard to come by now since the person running it passed away?) The other clones are mitsu apples, Star Pupil and Obama Runtz all from burning bush also. The large sip is another blue pop clone I am moming to replace the old one.
