How long can you keep a strain going?

My understanding is that you can only keep a clone going for so long before it loses its vitality and so many growers will cross something else with the original strain in order to reinvigorate the original strain.

I was talking to someone in the commercial marijuana business about my "Triangle Kush" (so-called) seeds from Mass Medical Strains, that I am running at the moment. It's supposed to be Triangle crossed with 88G13HP (Hash Plant)...So, it's NOT really pure Triangle Kush, after all. But, my friend told me that almost every old strain has been adulterated by some newer genetics in order to try and preserve the older genetics. I'm not sure that made sense to me, but I didn't want to argue about it, so I'm looking for some forum feedback on the question. Thanks

Yes you in inbreed and backcross to gain stability and uniformity. You can backcross with the same mom and dad forever to create new generations and then create female seeds from the new generation.

It takes a very long time for a first generation clone to really loose vigour. To me it has only happened after taking clone of a clone of a clone from the same genetic line after 5+ years.

I believe it's more common to loose vigour from any of the really bad plant diseases out there like HPLVD.

Cheers!

I think it's nastys before it's due to serial cloning there's many cuts around that been kept this way and still going strong they may lose a bit of vigour but again that might be down to some kind of pathogen

People used to call it "genetic drift". It turns out that's one of the really big canna misnomers because genetic drift is actually the gradual change of genes over multiple genarations or regular sexual reproduction so no offspring ever gets the exact same combination of genes as either parent.

It's almost definitely pathogens and/or epigenetic stress that actually causes it. Both can be avoided with equal parts diligence and luck. They can also both be treated with meristem tissue culture.
