I veg with a hps and i get stems as fat as fingerz

Yep, Vegging with HPS is fine, I do it myself.

But IMO HPS is best used to veg mothers that are being used for clones. HPS tends to grow taller plants that stretch out a bit more.

MH keeps your plants a lot lower and tighter node spacing. Better if you have height issues.

A mix, 3:1 HPS:MH would be Ideal though.

i have 3 100 watt hps lamps and they put off almost zero heat. im able to put them about 5 inches from my plants with no prob. i would never do this with a 250 or up though. the pic i posted shows them about 5 inches farther away than i usually keep them. i moved em back because i got a 2 tube 4 ft floro above it and two more 4 ft floros beside em. my issue is keeping the closet warm enough so that it doesnt hit 50 f or they stop growing.

I use a 250w HPS for my mothers. They grow within 3-4 inches without burning somethings. I wouldnt recommend keeping it that close for very long, but 4-5 inches for a 250w is Fine, just have fans blowing over your plants.
