First time growing info needed

So anyways me and a buddy are planning on just growing some MJ outdoors. Nothing terribly serious about it. As absolutely cheap as we can, while still producing the desirable results. About 90% all natural, with a few additives and human help along the way. Main thing is, outdoors, take care of itself for the most part, no elaborate systems (unless you consider earth the most elaborate system) and it's impossible for me to grow indoors.

But there's a few question that I've got.

One, how can you tell when the absolute soonest it is you can flower?

Two, what is the quickest way you can determine the sex of the plant? I know you've got to flower it, but is there any sort of tell tale sign earlier or tips and tricks on figuring it out; this way i can swap out the males and replant females as soon as possible...

Three, when you're flowering, unless i'm mistaken which i probably am, the 12/12 works something like this: you still need twelve hours daylight to continue photosynthesis so the plant can continue to "grow" and maintain life processes and whatnot. But you need the 12 hours of dark because that's what develop buds, or the hormone that triggers them... something or another.

But could you instead use like... 11/13, or 10/14... because most places say you need around 8 hours of sunlight. Well it still gets 8, but more darkness hopefully that can help buds grow larger/quicker/more potent.

Though i'm probably just ignorant and missed some big red sign saying "don't be a fool" and go 12/12

Much appreciate the help... and anything else you might find it worthwhile and useful to post. This is just a first grow, I don't want to miss any basics that are hugely important.

Thanks!

welcome to RIU.

first thing you should do is check out the GROW FAQ

here are some quick answers, i dont have all the answers, sorry.

1.mother nature will determine that for you. there are some ways to get around that tho.

2. outdoor flowering depends upon your location.

3. check for pre-flowers.

4. outdoor grows have nothin to worry about 12/12. mother nature is your lighting cycle. she will take care of that.

hope i helped a lil bit! good luck.

Thanks! best site in my opinion hands down. First grow but i've been a fan of the sticky green grower for a while now.
Yea, mother nature and all. But i'm just antsy about getting some as soon as possible, but not risking the plants or jumping the gun on it... i've read about stress related problems and i just want the best i can get as soon as i can get it....

So i was just wondering anyways, even though it is outdoors i've still got ideas on the lighting cycle. I would grow indoors it's just not going to happen. so is it reasonable to maybe attempt something like 11/13 or 10/14?

You should be fine w/ the nature time cycles you got going on. I'm not the outdoors man when it comes to growing, even though i plan on giving it a shot come spring. I'm just not sure how the time cycles will work out for you.

Now you might get the 12/12 or 11/13 or w/e, but as soon as spring hits and you got the whole equinox thing coming along your gonna be dealing w/ more light instead of less.

Your plant will shoot right into the flowering stage, and hey you might already be done before we hit spring. So Good luck man.
