250 Watt MH/HPS vs Many 20/40 Watt CFL's?

Ok so just wondering, but say I had a setup with like 8 CFL's 40Watt each, and maybe a 100watt CFL at the top of the plant.

Would that setup use less electricity than using 1 250Watt MH/HPS Light? Would it be close to the same? Would it use more?

The whole reason we're using CFL's is because we're worried it'll mess with my sister's BF's electricity who already uses most of it for his grow room. We were gonna get a 400Watt HID. But now we're thinking just getting a 250 Watt and it shouldn't cause too much of a problem with electricty....and will do better than CFL's?

Anyone have any comments?

Why would anyone have problems w/ electricity? Do you mean paying the bill? If it's not that, than go for the 400w MH/HPS. BTW the CFL setup would run you more.

CFL's put off heat too 8 42w would really give you some heat just grab the 250w youll be happy in the end just make sure you have good ventilation..

Well, lets do a bit of addition. 8 x 40 watt = 320 watts. Plus another hundred watts equals 420 watts.

You are asking whether 420 watts is less electricity than 250 watts?

The answer is an obvious NO. The 250 would be much cheaper, and probably give out as much light as 420 watts of CFL. HPS/MH are far more efficient than CFLs (more light per watt). This means more weed for less electricity usage.


EDIT: Wait, are you talking about ACTUAL watts for the CFLs, or "equivalent" watts? Either way though, HPS/MH will give more weed per watt.

Ok I just wasn't sure if it works like that, you know, adding up all the watts from each CFL and getting one number. If thats the case, then a MH/HPS 250 watt would do much better would it not? With this I'd only have to worry about one light fixture above the plants correct? And it penetrates better right? Possibly growing thicker buds?

You are spot on, on everything above. I also love HIDs, because yes you only have one fixture to worry about. I hate dealing w/ all the wiring of multiple CFLs. ;-)

That was me. I thought I left my name, I must have been having a stoner moment lol. :lol:

I do have a large amount of 40 equivalent CFLs (8 watts actual). They suck balls big time, and are sat here collecting dust until I find a good use for them. I'd use them for propogation, but they are 2700k, and i'm already covered for clone lighting. I bet they'd work in a pinch though, so i'll keep them for backup.

BTW thanks for the +rep regarding the other thing. I'd rep you back, but it won't let me, since i've already given you rep for this thread. I'll get round to it though. Your support is appreciated, and it's nice to know there are some level heads on here.

First time growing here, and I've got your basic common sense, lol, I mean I fly airplanes for fun lol. Just wondering, but you think it's possible with a basic 250 HPS light, like this one here:

And just wondering but what is so popular about Low Ryder? Is is a fast growing strain? if so, does it yield alot of bud?

Ya, HTGsupply kicks ass. I dunno if that's there actual site or a scam. Here's there actual site, and i order from them all the time HTGSUPPLY.COM . Some sativas can become huge, and get way over 50 grams, under right conditions of course. I'm not to sure on your strain per se. Low Ryders are just small short easy to grow plants, there product isn't the best, and yeild isn't to great, but they're apparently good for beginners. Best of luck, and keep us updated on the grow.

250w HPS will give you over 50 grams easily your not gonna want 1 tall monster under a 250w. though short topped and fimmed plants do best SOG SCROG and LST will also aid in your yield.. and for that strain i cant tell you to much i never heard of it or cant find it what are its genetics?
but my last grow was 4 mostly sativas under a 250w and yield was well over 50 grams and i had lots of issues with fungus and heat but still yielded decent nuggs and this was bagseed and others...

Just a quick comment, I did research before posting I just wanted to clarify with some people here that know what they're talking about, that's what these forums are for right? having a 250w Mh or HPS is the equivelent of running 2 100w incandesants and 1 50w incan. thats about 2 ceiling lights and a desk light......and the amount of lumens put out in the mh is alot more. i htink i have somthing like 25-28000 lumens. my cfl setup running 4 32watts put out like 6500 lumens. and they had to be put alot closer. you can find hps or mh on craigslist for anywhere between $50-$500. i picked up my 250mh for $65 with a new bulb. and you can get a conversion hps bulb to fit in the socket for $80...and its a 220w.
