These girls are starting to stink up the joint. Trichomes are everywhere.
I haven't watered since Sunday. I will be giving them light bloom nutes tomorrow. They are yellowing a little early.
The plants have gained so much budweight
compared to the buckets they are a trifle top-heavy.
I am not complaining
These things are huge.
Make no mistake.
I'm not holding up lighters or beer bottles for comparison.
I'm trying to find my fire extinguisher.
The three clones I started flowering last week aren't doing much yet, random pistils here and there.

I just came over here from the hempy thread to see what all the fuss is over. Man Shnkrmn whatever you're doing I want to duplicate it. Your trees are awesome!
I hope you don't mind but I have a few questions.
How low do you place the hempy hole (sounds kinky) on the 5g buckets?
You mentioned in an earlier post that you can look at the roots, how is that done?
I guess you don't worry at all that the buckets are not entirely light proof?
When you veg, what lights and light cycle do you use? (it seems like vegging for 24 for 3 months could get expensive)
What nute mixture do you veg with?
Are you flowering under 2 600 watters? One above one on the side?
I think that should bring me up to speed.

I don't mind.
My holes are about two inches up. I use a 3/8 or 1/2 inch drill bit and drill five or so holes. This keeps the perlite in without a screen needed.
I look at the roots when I transplant (once) and then when the grow is over and I've chopped. Not during!
There is a thin layer of algae on the inside of the bucket. It doesn't penetrate at all beyond the very edge and doesn't seem to affect anything.
Two months of veg were under 4 65W CFLs, so not that expensive. The HIDs do cost money to run but it's way cheaper than buying crap.
I was using one 600W HPS on top and one on the side until ten days ago when I decided to throw three more girls into flower. Now the lights are both pointing down.
I vegged on 24/0.
I am using Fox Farm products. I used Grow Big to veg, Tiger Bloom and Big Bloom for flower. RO water, cal-mag+ and hygrozyme. No extras during flowering. I can't be trusted with the basics lol.

I use cal-mag+ and hygrozyme and Big Bloom throughout the grow.
per gallon of RO water:
Grow
5ml calmag+
5ml hygrozyme
3ml Grow Big
30ml Big Bloom
I think this came to around 900 ppm. I'm not running nutes this high anymore.

550-600ppm
I have watered as frequently as every 4 days, but the weight change between 4 and 7 days is substantial, indicating that there is plenty of solution left in the medium. I watered on Sunday and it's possible I'll water tomorrow, but I may wait a bit.
I nute every other watering. Even pure waterings have cal-mag and hygrozyme. They hygrozyme digests organic matter in the bucket, which is probably why my runoff never smells skunky and my roots are very healthy. At least that's why I think I use it! The cal-mag is 2-0-0 and knocks down the pH of my water to around 5.3. I adjust that with pH up to 5.7-5.8. That's a more hydro range than hempy uses which is, I think 6.0-6.2.
I will flush for the last week or so. I'm also going to have a period of darkness (48-72 hours) before harvest. I've never done that before and I've seen a lot of assertions that This hugely increases resin production. Doesn't seem risky so I'll give that a try.

When you water, where does the runoff go? I don't see any drips or spots on the bucket or ground.

I place each plant in an empty rubbermaid and let most of the runoff collect in that. Otherwise, my basement kind of looks like buffalo bill's place in Silence of the Lambs. stone walls, some dirt floors, etc. Except for all the weird serial killer,moth fancier shit lol. So, if I'm lazy I just water em in place and let the runoff go to a floor drain. It dries in a few hours this time of year.
Oh yeah, I just remembered, I am going to collect some snow outside, melt it and see what the water parameters are like. If it's nice stuff I might try it instead of RO. mmmmmm, but not on these plants, lol. I'm not risking anything now.

I just did a snow melt test.
ph - 7.8 (too high, tap water is 7.5 and I have lots of trouble controlling ph)
TDS - 11 (I like that, tap water is 280)
When your grow is done, do you just throw out the perlite or have you found a way to reuse it?

I reuse the perlite to the extent possible. All of my current plants are in a mix of old and new. After harvest, I pull the root ball out of the bucket and if you lightly break up the root ball without tearing the roots too much you can get a lot back that's very clear of plant material. If it's too full of roots and I don't feel like picking and washing it out I throw it on my vegetable garden and till it in. Permanent soil amendment and a sink for any residual nutes. I use fox farm products there anyway lol. Also, like last year, I will grow basil in several hempy buckets outdoors. I have no scruples about using dirty perlite for that; I plant nursery plants with dirt rootballs in the perlite and haven't had a problem. I wouldn't do that with weed.
I haven't gotten to testing the snow water yet. It's pretty melty today for the first time in a while. I guess they don't have acid rain where you live . . .
But the TDS is equal to good store bought RO water.

The rain water ph is little too high for me. I have trouble keeping my ph low as it is. It always creeps up over 6.5 once I lower it to about 6 from over 7. It loves 7 and keeps going for it. ph is a constant battle for me.

First the new girls, who are never going to be beauty queens
on account of bad posture and complexion but they are anxious
to prove they have the stuff to compete.
The old ladies have gotten very tree-like
with good weight on all the branches and plenty of trichomes.
They smell beautiful. Very citrusy. These seeds were 5 years old when I germed them last year and were bought in Vancouver by someone else. I wish I knew more about them but they are what I have.
I just watered everything for the first time in 7 days. Just cal-mag and hygrozyme, but for the old ladies I put in 1/4 tsp/gal. cha-ching. Came to 387 ppm. pHed t0 5.8 and the runoff for all of them was around 6. Also, runoff TDS was a little higher than what went in. mid-400s. Washing out excess salts?
