First time growing with cfls

Hey there everyone for the purpose of this journal you may call me Mr. Smith. I would like to welcome you all to my first indoor grow using cfl's and fluoros. All comments are more than welcome as i have only grown outdoor. Hope you enjoy and hopefully i can get some good feedback and improve my skillz. The next few posts will contain pictures and descriptions of each area of my setup.

:leaf: My vegetation cabinet is quite basic but as i was on a very strict budget i had to shop wisely.

The cabinet is 54" in length x 14" in width. From lights to bottom of cabinet is about 24".

For lighting i found 2 dual 4' t8 shop lights on sale for 3.98!!! At my local Lowes.

I also purchased 4 6500k tubes for 5 bucks a pack.

So for my veg cabinet i spent no more than 20$

The first two pics are of the cab itself, 3rd is of my little ones just after breaking soil, the last is one at 2 weeks.

:leaf:For my flowering area i used a large walk in closet. It is about 4'x5' in which i utilize a space approx 1.5'x 4'.

I have a dual window fan with one blowing past the lights and the other on the plants.

For lighting i also had to shop wisely.

I purchased (2) 4 packs of 23w 2700k cfls putting out 1600lum ea. 5.97 a pack.

I also purchased (1) 4 pack of 23w 3500k cfls putting out 1450lum for 5.97.

To mount the lights i only needed 5 sockets as i already had some. 2 bucks a peice for a total of 10$

A timer was needed to insure a steady 12/12 light cycle so it was also purchased. 6 bucks.

Misc supplies including tape and wire nutz cost me about 5 bucks.

The total purchase cost for the flower room was no more than 45$

Currently i have 4 female plants 1 1/2 weeks into 12/12 @ about 1' 4". These were my test plants grown under far worse lighting conditions until i built my setup.

From now on i will be introducing all my plants into 12/12 at just 2 weeks as to better utilize the cfl's.

:leaf::weed::leaf:Here are the pictures of my children...

They are all grown in a mixture of just dirt and my homemade compost. The young ones are in SUPER GHETTO pots i made out of computer paper and tape. I know i know ill get around to it, just no $$ for pots just yet.

I water them every single day but dont get them too saturated.

For nutes i am only using mg superbloom at about 1/2 strength

Pic 3 and 8 are my future babies mamas. one is a clone i took off my first female and the other i stuck back into reveg as soon as it showed sex.

If by the looks of my plants u have any suggestions/comments by all means post them, i am hoping for a decent crop and would welcome any help. THanks for checking me out, ill update probably 2 times a week with new pics.

Thanks DrGreen im pretty happy with the results so far. It does seem soooooo slow though.. (maybee cuz all i do is smoke and look at the plants LOl)

Thanks WinkDOGG i wanted to have lotsa lights like u but money ran short( had to buy some herb till mines ready ya dig) And dam he is the man!! A harvest every couple o wseeks is just what im goin for!! Only thing is im runnin outta seeds and i cant clone for shit!!! I took six cuts from my first lady and only the one made it :-(

Hey man. Congrats! You thought things out in your setup it seems. And did some research, and now you've got a bunch a lady's. +Rep for doing your own leg work.

TIP. Cloning should be easy. Key points to sucess......Peat Pucks. Hands down. Or Jiffy Pucks As i've heard. Get some. And some root gel or powder. (gel is better). Cut's at 45 degrees, and take off about a 1/4 inch of skin from the outside on onside above the cut. Dip it in the Gel. Stick it in the Peat Puck. Keep it wet and HUMID for a few week's. It hasn't fail'd me once.

Thanks sgt. I definitely needed those tips. Honestly thats one thing i didnt research so much because it sounded eassy. I just chopped off a branch dipped it in rooting powder from about 5 years ago and stuck it in dirt...,:-( Cool tip about removing some of the skin too ++reps for u! Aslo if u could hepl me once more, how big are the cuttings u usually take. Mine mighta been too small. About 3 nodes :leaf:

  • Ok guys as if i wasnt hurting enough from the worst upset ever on superbowl sunday :-( MY OWN CHILDREN struck me another blow. Just after lights on i went in to check on them and while smoking a bowl forgetting all the troubles in my life what should happen you ask? ? My favorite plant, my biggest plant, my sexiest plant,the one in my avatar and the parent of my clone whips out a pair of balls and f-in tea bags me. Thats right , right in the face, a dirty little HERMIE WHORE. And it gets worse this led me to wonder if my other plants were up to no good and it seems like one of the twins might also have a few balls. I had not been checking them regularly since they had an abundance of hairs. Im gonna wait a couple days to be sure. If so it will leave me with only 2 large plants. Luckily i still have about 30 yungins on the way but my sucess rate is no bueno. Out of my original original batch i had 4 males 2 hermies and just 2 female. Is this my fault or just a result of poor bagseed?:neutral:Sorry bout the rant but had to get it out. o and kick rocks steelers.

on the bright side its ok cause its just my smaller popcorn nugs and im going to let them finish and harvest the seeds :-) i think mine hermed beceuse of cold water shock or temp change shock??

Your gonna let them finish? How much of a problem do u think the pollen will be with future crops. Im afraid if i let em finish that ill miss some pollen when i clean up and all my babies will have seeds!?!?!?

my plants are all female they all had perfect female flowers and then they hermed they were not exposed to any pollen the hermed from stress im pretty sure . when they "feel" threatened the reproduce seeds themselves to sustain the breed its a survival technique most plants use:) so the seeds produced should be feminized!! if your plants were polinated by male polen then that pollen could still be in the room so you have problems ! i guess i would take out the ones with the worst seed growth and hope the others are not effected!

:weed:Hey everyone ive got some updated pictures for ya'll to checck out. Im gonna need to use a better camera next time because my cell phone cam does these babies no justice. Nothing big to report i cut down the plant that went hermie but besides that all is well. I cant help but think the kids look streched but ill have to attribute that to the 12/12 at such a young age. Among my pics u will notice i have named 4 plants...Susan, Sara, TitsMagee, And Brittany.. I have done this because from now on we will follow their growth so we do not get confused because i have alot of plants. I have also left TitsMagee in her original 8 oz cup as an experiment to see just how much a plant will grow with such confined root space. If u notice anything wrong let me know. And as always, may the quaker oats dude be with you.:joint:

:confused:I was in the middle of rearranging my closet and adding some extra 4ft tubes because my babies needed more light/space when the hook that supported my main Cfl setup pulled free from my ceeling and my rig came crashing down.. Luckily the plants were moved at the time but i suffered the loss of 3 Cfls. I feel ridiculous for trying to rearrange everything with the bulbs still in but shit happens i guess. Im outta cash for a while too so ill have to hope the 4 4ft t8 make up for what i lost.. Ill post pics of my new setup when i update in a few days.

Be very careful when cleaning up mercury poisioning is no joke gloves eye protection no bs i tiny drop of that shit could kill ya...ok i might be exagerating a bit but dont touch or breath that shit!
