why is mh better for vegging rather then hps? im wondering because i want my veg room to be 600 watts. the kits i see only come in hps or hps/mh. hps alone is cheaper then the hps/mh. should i spend the extra cheese for the hps/mh?

this is more of a personal thing than anything else

halides will veg better than hps, but the difference is marginal, advantages include less node stretching and added UVB spectrum, however HPS bulbs have a certain amount of blue spectrum in them already, this is more than enough to veg under..

i personally bought a digital combo ballast that does both bulbs, but as i mentioned it isnt necessary, more of a waste of money than anything.. although with some plants i veg for 4 weeks, if i was vegging for any less than 3 weeks i wouldnt bother with halide at all..

I personally want the stretch in veg from the blue spectrum of a MH because the plants get taller and bushier. codwalop is right about the spacing but the buds dont get as big so you dont get as much weight. Plus you still get some red spectrum with a MH and you can use stuff like BushMaster to limit stretch. I veg with cfls to save money on power and flower with a HPS. If you want to use just one bulb they make enhanced spectrum bulbs that have extra blue in the HPS bulbs and extra red in the MH bulbs.
