How far should brand new cuttings be from a 1000 watt MH light?

Ya should just get a small shop light for clones. Its hard to control shit under 1000 watts. Once they get rooted then its all good.

Yeah you can just get a couple CFL's and you will have more control and you take a high risk of frying your plants with the 1000.

OK. let's assume that the clones are rooted but still small and I no other option except the 1000 watt. What's a safe distance?

So when is it safe to put seedlings/clones under a 1000 watts and at what distance?

Well at 5ft height a 1000w can cover an 8X8 area. Depending on your space and light reflection I would say atleast that but you will have to monitor it close...Cover your medium around the stalk so that light can't penetrate the medium to your roots and good luck.
