Very new to growing. Need help.

Hi guys, this is my first thread and first post. Nice to meet you all.

On to the main topic of my thread. I'm extremely new to growing, and i have a budget of about 0$ due to the struggles in this day and age. Anyway. I just planted a good seed that i found in a bag. All i did was plant it in a plastic cup, i used some gardening soil, it has a few wood pieces in it and thats about it. I put it in my window seal and water it daily. Its been about a week and..2 days and it sprouted a few days ago.

My questions to you are.

1.When am i going to need to transfer to a bigger pot?

2. Is how I'm growing it now healthy enough to sustain life?

3. I don't have money for any kind of equipment so whats the best and most cost efficient way of keeping my baby in the healthiest condition possible?

4. My room is very hazey. Because I'm a chain cigarette smoker. Is the smoke in the air bad for it?

5. any kind of cheap lightbulbs i can use when i can't but it by the window seal anymore (due to people noticing what it is, etc.)

6. How do i cure/harvest a female?

7. Stupid question, but what can i actually do with a male plant?

I think that's it for now..If i can think of anything else, I'll let you know. Thanks very much.

by you having it on a window sill, its gonna stretch till it falls over... i don't think you want that...

i switch containers when there are way too many roots at the bottom...

if your room is hazy from smoke, it sounds like you have poor ventilation, which isn't good for the plants

cfl's are cheap and are used many times for small setups.. since you're growing 1 plant, you should think about this... i didn't buy my setup.. .i found a tv stand with 2 cabinets on it, on the street... all i did was saw of the cabinets and i'm using them for my setup.. also found a thrown out computer tower... i gutted it out and planning to use that for another setup... trust me, you don't have to buy setups, its up to you.. you can find some bullshit and clean it up real good... there are people who even use cardboard boxes.. don't recommend it, but they do use it....but like i said, cfl's are cheap and ideal for small setups... do you have a closet..

a male plant is good for getting your girls pregnant, if you want the seeds... like some people have certain strains they like, or they want to cross pollinate 2 different strains to make their own shit... so they use the sperm, get the chick pregnant.. and now you have a bi-racial baby... other people use the leaves for hash, but i also heard it isn't worth making hash from all male leaves because it lacks the thc...

for curing and harvesting, you can look in the GrowFAQ.. there are different methods... choose the one you like

you can, but what i'm trying to say is, since you're trying to hide the fact you're growing.. stretching early on isn't good at all... by the time you want to harvest, you're basically working with something thats gonna need a bucket due to its size.. if it makes it that far... since you don't have a fan on it, its also gonna be a weak, stringy looking thing... poor ventilation, poor lighting is also a bad idea.. you might end up with a hermie with those conditions... thats why people have setups, so they can manipulate the size of the plant and keep it a secret.. feel me... people even use buckets to grow in.. you know.. the 5 gallon buckets with a lid on it, that you can find on constructions sites or wherever else... the best approach is checking the "indoor grow" forum and the "setup" forum to get different ideas... do research... many people on here started off like you.. but the research is what made them official and more professional...

oh... and trust me.. i'm not a money man... i'm not rolling in green, so trust me, i know where you're coming from.... thats why i'm giving you this advice.. i started off on a window sill.. the shit didn't workout because of the lack of light, ventilation, no fan, and stretching...

then i made a setup using incandescent bulbs... shiiiiiiitttttt... that wasn't cool

then i made a setup with cfl's..

but i also had to learn about nutes, what would be a good mixture of soil to use (since i'm not gonna go online to order expensive soil, since i can find soil at a store), i killed many plants till i got the growing process right for me.. because growing isn't that easy.. had to learn when to transplant..deficiencies... and still more things to learn

thats where i started and it helped a lot
i hope ur grow goes great and you find what ur looking for
i found cutting straws into the lenght of the stem then slicing them down 1 side works good for props
and have you got a hood on ur plant
i like to use a clear cup so it acts as a tent

My questions to you are.

1.When am i going to need to transfer to a bigger pot?
I never start plants out in small containers, I always start them out in the largest pot size that I will be using for that particular grow. That means I am not an expert on when to repot young plants so someone else her may be better suited to answer that but if I were going to do the start small and then transplant deal I would wait until I had about 4 or maybe five sets of leaves on my plants unless they were in very small containers.

If someone here who transplants has better information please give it and if they do ignore what I said.

2. Is how I'm growing it now healthy enough to sustain life?

That is difficult to say for sure given that we have no idea of where you live, as in what season it is now where you live and also what direction the sun rays are coming from to hit your plant through the window it is in.

I have read of people who grew using sunlight through windows but the single time I attempted it as an experiment it failed miserably. I even moved my young plants from room to room so in the morning they would receive the morning sun and in the afternoon receive the afternoon sun but they still did not receive enough sunlight.

You might have better conditions and have better luck but in my opinion I would not get my hopes up to high if I were you.

3. I don't have money for any kind of equipment so whats the best and most cost efficient way of keeping my baby in the healthiest condition possible?

Basically doing what you are doing and going to do. You appear to have no other option.

4. My room is very hazey. Because I'm a chain cigarette smoker. Is the smoke in the air bad for it?

Smoking in a grow area is not something you should do. Find another location for your plant or smoke somewhere else or stop smoking.

5. any kind of cheap lightbulbs i can use when i can't but it by the window seal anymore (due to people noticing what it is, etc.)
There are CFL’s that can be purchased inexpensively almost anywhere and anywhere in the world.

6. How do i cure/harvest a female?

Follow the link below. It will tell you all you need to know.

7. Stupid question, but what can i actually do with a male plant?

A single male plant alone is really not worth much of anything.

It does not produce smokable bud so that is out.

Without a female you cannot use it for breeding purposes so that it out.

If it happens to be a very frosty male, like some I have had, you can make hash from the leaves but chances are you will not get enough out of one plant to go through the effort and expense since even frosty males will contain only a low level of THC so without the leaves from a female or two or five to add to it I do not believe it would be worth the attempt.

damn dude.. why so long...

unless you're saying its a special seed you want to grow, other than that, i don't see why it would be hard to come across a regular bagseed..

the goal isn't to grow some potent shit right now.. you're not in the position to think that way due to your environment for growing...

i know you're anxious and want some stuff to grow, but you have to crawl before you walk.. get the setup first.. or plan it out.. give yourself another 2 weeks of finding pieces... during that time, hopefully you can stumble on another seed... because truthfully, you're wasting your time right now... i wouldn't say this if you were able to plant the thing outside, or able to grow it tall indoors... but since you can't... the setup is what you have to get

Can i use toothpicks or something like that to keep it up straight?

If your plant stretches, and it almost certainly will considering your light source being a window, you can stake it up but if you keep it firm and steady your stem will not grow as fast and as thick as it otherwise would. It would be best to take something taller and stronger than a toothpick and then tape something soft that you can tightly attach to whatever you use to stake your plant and then tie a somewhat loose loop around the stem of your plant so it will allow for some movement.

Then place a fan, a small one would do and would be better in fact that one that will produce hurricane force winds, and turn it on low and let it blow on your plant and the back and forth, side to side motion of the wind on the plant will cause increased stem growth.

That is something that you want very much because when your plant gets larger and heavier, and if it is a female and has many buds and they are heavy, that is assuming that it survives past the seedling stage given what has to be a major lack of light, the plant will need a strong sturdy stem and branches to carry the weight. If not and if you do not have it staked and tied up well either branches could break or the main stem could break.

Yea....

Like needhelp mentions, you can use a cardboard box. The ignition point of paper is over 200C. CFLs & other fluorescents don't operate at that temperature(if they got anywhere near they'd fail! You can feel quite safe with them.) HID exceeds it, you are warned.

hope you didn't use soil from outside.. it might have critters in it also...

ok... check it out.....

cardboard box.. 1 ft to 1 ft 6 inches in height... 1 ft or more in width should be good to start off with.. since cups would be good for you to start off in...
1 26w cfl daylight
1 26w cfl softwhite
y splitter...
you can either buy a light socket or find a lamp on the street or one that nobody wants... use the socket and cord from it to put in your box... thats your setup for now.... oh.. and get into the habit of collecting wires and cords from tv's, stereos and appliances when people throw them out.. that saved me a lot of trouble.. i already had the adapters, wires and cords when i was ready to build...

seeds are free... people don't keep the seeds when they roll up, thats how i get mines... i'll notice people about to throw them away, but i'll collect them before they do.. just don't let them know your intentions... sit by them when they are rolling up, when they're not noticing or when they leave, take the seeds...

this will cost less than 20 dollars... not including soil and fans... i understand your situation righ now... but for under 20 dollars, you can have a setup just to start off... and this setup would be good for a month, i believe... judging by the hieght of one of my spaces

mannnnn... all my containers are from recycle bins... you know.. when people throw them out... i use soda bottles and all kinds of other bottles that have a nice size to them... put some holes on the bottom and tape the sides if its a clear bottle...

i use tap water and filtered water... i get the filtered water from this place i go to when i hangout...ha... i don't have a filter... so whenever i go out, i just fill up the bottles with water and bring them home... because truthfully, its there for free..

look... i don't believe in spending on much.. as you can see..ha.. so trust me on this...

oh.. and i was wrong about growing on windowsills, because i do do it still... but i was trying to get you to do a setup because its better... i don't start off on windowsills, only when i want them to sprout... then after they sprout, i put them in the box... but i do have a few on the windowsill AFTER i had them in the box for like a month... after the stem is nice and thick... one is trained to grow sideways and i FIM it, so it would have more than one cola... but now i changed my mind and gonna use it for clones... but its different levels are short.. i think because it was doing this in the box, it trained itself to keep doing it, i'm not sure... and i have 3 others that i didn't train to grow sideways yet, but their levels are short... and this is comparing it to another one i had on the windowsill longer, that was stretched in the beginning when it first sprouted... and its growing all dumb and shit now... the others are doing better than i thought they would... but this is after it had a good strong stem to support the weight...
