Luanda - Two people were killed and at least another eight injured on Saturday in a stampede to enter a stadium in downtown Luanda where Pope Benedict later presided at a youth rally, the Lusa news agency reported.
Lusa said the incident happened as thousands of people rushed to enter the stadium about four-and-a-half hours before the Pope arrived at the stadium.
Police and hospital officials were not immediately available for comment on the report.
Lusa said the victims were a young man and a young woman who died at the scene.
Their ages weren't given.
AFP reports that more than 30 000 youths had packed the stadium.
More than half of Angola's population is under 18, and many bear physical scars of the decades of civil war that left the country one of the most heavily landmined nations on the planet.
Although Angola's economy has boomed since the end of civil war in 2002, two thirds of the population lives on less than $2 a day - struggles that the pope addressed directly as he sought to reaffirm faith among the youth.
"I see some of the many thousands of young Angolans who have been maimed or disabled as a result of the war and the landmines.
"I think of the countless tears that have been shed for the loss of your relatives and friends," he said.
"You may have your share of difficulties, but you are filled with great hope, great enthusiasm and a great desire to make a new beginning.
"My young friends, you hold within yourselves the power to shape the future," Benedict added. - Reuters
