The binding energy is what holds atoms together and can be broken through natural decay methods done over time, or by various unnatural methods, one being Neutron Induced Fission. So therefore, atoms are not immortal either. There's A LOT more about Nuclear Physics that is simply mind-blowing. I recommend everyone do some research on it, it's grossly misinterpreted and really is a powerful and amazing tool we have.

Yeah, it's pretty cool finding someone that actually knows something about this kind of stuff. There are all sorts of crazy molecular reactions that are going on at the same time. But you should know that the forces of repulsion and attraction of an atom can be easily overcome, hence fission and fussion. If you want to read about something really cool, check out Pair Production....indeed, matter can be created and destroyed. It's when a high energy photon (no mass of course) in the presence of a nucleus turns into a positron and electron (2 masses) shooting off in different directions. It's pretty awesome.

I should also add that we have no idea how an atom is actually comprised. Bohr, himself, said his atomic model was simply for understanding not accuracy at all. So as far as on a physical sense, what science knows as a 'collision' is somewhat left for interpretation.

An atom is a form of energy (E=mc2) And energy cannot be destroyed, however an atom as we know it can very easily be 'destroyed' and no longer exist in it's previous form. Hell, a proton can become a neutron, a neutron can become an electron, etc. It's kind of hard to imagine we're being 'used' by atoms, even in a figurative sense.

That's a pretty subjective statement. Almost emblematic wording, but I don't quite understand if there's supposed to be some sort of substantial meaning in any of it....other than we live, then we die....sort of lucid, right.

I guess I was just confused on the word 'agreement', which I consider a sentient term. I like the cog and wheel analogy, I never heard that one before. But I don't understand why so many people have to insist on absolute indubitableness of their beliefs (Christians, Islamics, Atheists, etc.) I'm not sure if you're actually implying any of that...I may be (more than likely) misinterpreting you again....and if so, sorry in advance. But seriously, why can't we all just agree that life is an amazing enigma or at least extremely subjective. There's a very ignorant "I'm right, you're wrong" attitude when it comes to anything epistemological-based.....Uhhh, I'm going to stop myself right now....I can go on about this crap for days..... SweatyC, you made some good posts and I enjoyed reading them. I agree with your analogies and "agreement" may have not been a bulls eye approach. vocabulary and perspectives will create different interpretations.

It is religion in all of its forms which says it has the answers. I find this to be blatantly incorrect and a misguided form of gaining control of peoples free will. They are all incorrect. What religious types cannot stand is that there may be NO answer. On some level, I can understand it. Like reading a really good book but never knowing the end.
As I have posted before though, people don't like knowledge which makes them uncomfortable. However, if one does not know the ABC's of something it is not acceptable to insert X,Y&Z and pass it off as the same thing, and that is exactly what religion does. It holds us back.
