240 Volt Fluorescent

Alrighty,
I need to put a lot of fluros in my room but it would be much better for me to put them on a 240 volt. The kits at home depot all say 120volt on the side.... Would I have to buy my own fixtures and ballasts in order to get a 240 (I think they might actually be a true 215 volt) fluoro set up? Couldnt find any kits online either :(

No you cant do it, unless you run a step down, which would in turn be pointless. We try to be too different, buy some flouros and plug em in

They do not make 240 volt flour. ballasts. However they do make 277 volt and 208 volt ballasts but these are limited to commercial applications.

The ballast I linked to is 120-277 volt. My electric is in that range right? 220-240? Why does it matter if its designated for commercial application as long as I can plug it in?

In the posts I have read it does not seem to make a big diff in $. If your running like 10 1000w hps setups it would allow you to safely draw enough power to do so on one circut, but otherwise not really any difference from what I have read. Also you will not be able to simply convert a 120v plug to use 220, you need the proper guage wire drawn from you electrical box. This is all 2nd hand info btw and just a summary of the posts reguarding this that I have read. It sounds expensive to get this kind of setup started perhaps outweighing any possible benefits? Just playing devils advocate :)

Yep olosto - you got it right, i know all this. and the price is exactly the same by the way. im already hooked up for 240 though and to save more space on my 120 i'm looking into a bunch of 240 v fluoro's but no one seems to have the scoop on em.
