Hello everyone!

I'm looking at getting a new partner soon, heh.. I love dogs and I am in need for some home security when i'm not home.

I've been doing some research lately, but I was wondering if anyone knew what the best breed is for home protection? I would like a loyal fun dog that will bark at anyone who comes to the door that's not me or my girlfriend.. I'm not looking for a pitbull :)

Depends whether you have your heart set on a particular kind of dog..
most dogs will bark at the door, especially if they are rewarded for doin so..We gave our Mastweiler treats every time he did it, and he's been doin it ever since.

(NOTE from MRS Frosty - animal behaviourist) - Before you rush out to spend $1.5k why not visit your local pound, they always have pups n young dogs that you can work with and train to behave how you wish... you'll be saving a pooch and saving yourself hella $$$
There's always the obvious Rott's,dober's,mastiffs etc that need rehoming, and will be a good deterrent for your home...These kind of breeds are naturally protective of their homes and have good guarding instincts, they are also very good at determining who is ok and who is not, although they can prove stubborn to train due to their strong character and intelligence, and also need constant and regular exercise, to deter them from becoming bored and possibly destructive around the home if theyre left to their own devices.

Our local SPCA does a really decent job of finding homes for strays and abandons. :)
I run regularly but I own a small house.. Doberman seemed like the right one for me, although im not sure if size would be an issue.

I figure, if I can buy something that protects my 2,000/mo operation.. and get a good companion out of it.. $1,500 isn't that bad at all!

I'll keep that in mind, giving treats for barking at the door.. I like that, thanks! alot!

I concur with Mrs. Frosty.

A few thoughts....

Any dog larger than a toy breed will deter a prowler. My Lab is the friendliest dog ever, but he intimidates the shit out of people who do not know him. His bark is loud and he sounds the alarm at any unusual noise. It also helps that he is 100 lbs. People who do not know me steer clear of my house whether I am at home or not.

A dog is a huge commitment. You are not only acquiring an added security measure, you are inviting into your home a lifetime (for the dog at least) companion who will require love, care, and nurturing.

Please, please, please consider a shelter animal. Save a life. The money you save will be spent on vet bills, food, and general care. And you would have to spend that regardless of the initial investment on the dog.

I thought I'd chime in, first some toy breeds are very good watch dogs. They have excellent hearing and a very distinct bark (yap) lol. I have an american staffy and a chihuahua, the muscle and the mouth I call them. My am-staff doesnt bark much but he is very scary looking only hes really gentle. My chi is the best watch dog cause he barks at people coming through my front gate, most times the staffy wont (he only barks at dogs..)

Definitely look into getting a dog from the animal shelter, and going to training schools can really help build a good bond between you and your dog ;-);-) Good luck in any case!

i've got a pretty cantankerous racoon and one pissed of sugar glider that will scratch the shit out of you.

Due to me becoming a police officer.. (Okay, that wasn't funny).. No, I was looking at the German Shepherd breed, they seem nice :)

I grew up with a black-lab/collie mix, it is a fantastic dog! A little too lazy though (black lab) and a little two nippy (collie).. It was my fault though, I never really trained her.

Fortunatly our SPCA (shelter) finds homes for most of the dogs, there are usually 1 - 4 dogs posted and the list changes weekly it seems :)

abd this A MAN ya heard.Hes a beast ,notice the shockcollar,yea we gotta have one of those to calm his hyper ass,hard headed ass down.Yhe most territorial animal i came across.You aint gone just come in my house without me,uh uh!
