I have a question.I went to home depot this morning to discover they had 250 watt,400 watt, high pressure sodium and metal halide bulbs( and ballasts).my question is are these bulbs the same as the bulbs in my local hydro store? If so why the hell am i paying three times what home depot wants.I pay $65.00 for my hps bulb from the hydro shop, home depot wants $22.00 for the same bulb or so it apears.does anyone have any info?:joint:

I'm pretty new at this but from what I've read thier is difference in the gases and the fillement in the bulbs. The ones at HdePOT won't have the same ratings for lumens and what not.

I will have to check lumen rating but as for the different gas thing,I dont know. maybe there is more or less gas inside. As for the "fillament" I could be wrong but i was told the fillament was some sort of crystalls that react with sodium that creates heat in turn creating high pressure.Hence high pressure sodium .Please correct me if im wrong.

I wouldn't advise anyone not to use an off-the-shelf HPS, the street version MH is a very poor light for growing, the ballast & reflector would work OK but you need a horticultural grade bulb which puts out a proper spectrum.

I have a 400 watt HPS, in my flower room, that I got at Home DePot. Ive been using it for about 11 months. I have had 5 harvests and every one has been just as good as any stuff I get at any of the clinics around here. But not all bulbs are the same, check the lumen output and the kelvins (color, K's).

I have a 150 watt hps parking lot light and had several 400 and 600's years ago. All worked just fine. Friends of mine used to work for an electrical supply company that lets just say didn't know how to do inventory. Grow with what you have and can get within your means. There is no 100% right way. Its what works for you man

i did not say don't use a store bought HPS, I use a 150 myself.
6500 K CFLs will do a far better job than a MH street light on a watt/watt comparison for veging.

The bulbs are the same as standard MH & HPS bulbs but not the same as the upgraded bulbs, for example the 430-watt HPS bulbs with an additional bit of blue spectrum that can be used with a 400-watt ballast.

The reason you pay so much at a hydro store is you, like so many others, assume the bulbs are actually made for grow lights and that they are different when found in hydro/plant stores than when found elsewhere.

them lights are mainly for outside lighting.. street lights ..ect...ect... but im sure u can use them

There is not a difference in the standard bulbs, they are all made by the same manufacturers and use the same designs (each manufacturer’s design that is) and they put out the same light spectrum.

Unless someone buys a specialty bulb that has been designed for additional light spectrum for growing they are all basically the same. The CFL’s that most CFL users use are made for home lighting and not for plant growing. Still they work, to a degree anyway, so it is not so much what something was originally designed to do but instead what it will do.

That would depend on how many CFL’s were used and how they were placed and what reflective material would be used the wattage of the MH and what reflective material would be used. It is not as clear-cut as you made it appear.

I found it amusing that you called the MH a "street light" but did not call the CFL’s home/room lights like they are.
