CFL's are better bc your concentrating that amount of light right near the plant the 40 watt tubes are spreading those 40 watts over a larger area, but they will work.. they just will take a little longer to grow is all. If they are pure or mostly Indica they won't get to 4 feet. I would say flower them at around 12-15 inches and then they will double or so and get up to 30-40 inches at most depending on your light and nutrients. I have a 90% Sativa that I flowered at 8 inches and it's about 4.5 feet with ff and nutes under a 400wHPS. I got 2oz off the last one. The Indica bag seeds that I grew last time I flowered at 15 inches and they doubled to 30 inches under 3x42w CFL's and I got 29gr.'s Just to give you an idea the spectrum. I say flower at 15 inches and do four at a time under your 400w setup.

I was also curious about the quality of the bud I'll get from them. I know alot of it is in the genetics, they came from really good mids. If thay are at least that good I would be happy.

They will be more potent for sure because you woudn't have pollinated them and the thc content and resin content will be much higher by several levels.

I changed my set up a little yesterday so I could flower and veg at the same time. Still have a few things left to do, like get the plants closer to the light.
I have another fixture and was thinking about making a frame to mount them to like a roof. Trying to twice the light in almost the same space. This is the same light I had them under first first 2 weeks they seemed to like it.

I would wait till they have 7 nodes to flower (and get a 600W HPS)..... so about now yeah....

You can totally build a rack to hold the lights. I have auto light sockets that I just unscrewed the reflectors from and then I plug them in and hang them down from little screw in hooks from the ceiling, then I just pull the light up or down by its cable and then use a clothes pin twisty tye to hold it in place. Thats great that you have both setups of flower and veg going simulataneous b/c you stagger them now if you choose to. I have 1 plant done every month sometimes two which works out very nicely. I trty to have a haze or sativa dominant and an Indica dominant so I can choose whta high I'm in the mood or if I want help to get to sleep.

How long did it take to veg to 4'? How big will it get during flower?
I know I don't have perfect conditions but it seems like it would take me more than 3 months of veg to get that big.

Its a mother that has had two cloning sessions (so subtract 2 weeks for each cloning session) clone was taken November of Last year (Purple Kush is a clone only strain) so yes, 3 months, and I have slow vegged them. If I had fed them more, given them slightly more air circulation, and moved them slightly farther away from the lights more often, they would be bigger (I have two mothers the same age). I wouldn't recommend vegging a plant to this point unless you plan to dedicate a full 600w HPS (preferably a 1000W) or your going to flower outside (flowering outside being the better option, its what I am doing). Or you could turn it into a mother, and take cuttings to make a virtually endless supply of clones..... its all up to you man....How long did it take to veg to 4'? How big will it get during flower?

I took some more pics of the a couple of things.
The first two pics are of the sickest of my plants. I got nutes on sunday and noticed a difference the next day. Now 4 days later the new growth is coming in agian and it looks almost happy.
The third pic is the one I have a question about. Those great big yellow fan leaves(one in front and one in the reflection). How long should they stay around? I started to flower them three days ago. Befor I gave this one some nutes the yellow was worse.
Any comments welcome.

I'm pretty sure I did (over water) at first. But have since corrected that mistake. That plant seems to want alot of water though. after feer of overwater I was worried about it not getting enough. It did get some color back after the nutes.
Are they doing the plant any good when they look like that?

They look like there curling under? I'd let them go a little longer in veg, get them real healthy and then flip the the light.This is my first grow, looking to find out when I should change to 12/12.
They are 4 weekd old and seen to be doing good.
Any comments or suggestions are welcome.

I don't think that any more veg time would help it at all.
I flowered at 4-1/2 weeks it was 15" tall and already had what I'm assuming was preflowers.
The leaves looked like that from the beginning on this plant only and are looking better here lately.

i took a closer look. Looks like N deficiency. Don't over do it though, because that will make things a lot worse. Once dead, the plant matter won't turn green again. Leave those leaves on the plants to see if it gets worse, keep some N in your feeding schedule, and you should be fine.
