CFL temperature?

How hot do CFL's get. I have 4 40W bulbs in a grow tent and they seem to be putting off too much heat. I really thought they were cool bulbs but damn they are almost as bad as my 150W HPS.

The temperature directly next to the bulb is like almost 90F and if the plants are supposed to be 2-4" away from the bulb isnt that too hot? Any advice is greatly appreciated...

They still put out some heat. If you let them sit around with no ventilation, the 6500k will run up to about 100F and the 2700k to about 110F.

If you have a grow box, you can put an exhaust fan to blow the hot air out, and put a fan on the bottom as an intake to move the cooler air upwards.

Without fans the temp in a cfl grow box will climb extremely fast.

Ok thanks. I have a grow box with an exhaust fan and an air intake. I also have a fan around mid-box-level lightly blowing on the plants...The last thing I need is a fan blowing the hot air off the lights towards the exhaust.

Most people dont realize how hot CFL's get. In an enclosed space....the heat that a few CFL lights put off is small at first...but as no air is ventilated it starts getting hotter and hotter.

I have 10 CFL's in my closet which climbs to 90 degrees during the day.

Just have a couple of fans circulating the air and make sur eto get some fresh air in the grow room whether you just open a door once and a while or ventilation.
