Yield per Square Meter

Sorry - I guess I didn't ask my question clearly. I know about conversion rates between metric and Standard systems. What I am wondering is why yield is measured in terms of square meters, and not in terms of...oh say...the height of the plant. For example, I am doing my first grow in soil...in five gallon pots. So how do I relate that to square meters? It just doesn't make any sense to me.
(The five thousand pounds comment was just me being a smartass. I am growing NYC sour diesel. Which brings up other questions as to whether or not that is what I really have. But I'll cross that bridge later.)

I have wandered this for a while. I went to paradise-seeds.com and clicked on their FAQ and an answer was there. They say that they advise 25 plants per sq meter and inducing flowering early BUT you can also grow bigger plants of 9 or even 4 and achieve practically the same results. Their main concern with having the bigger plants is the light getting to the lower branches. Now I know your thinking holy shit 25 fuckin plants?! Cause my 3 gal pots are 11inches in diameter so how small are those pots supposed to be (obviously fucking small)and could that create root bound problems or other problems? idk, they told me to consult a grow book. but i know with my 3 gal pots and my 400watt hps with organic soil and organic fertalizers i yield about 2oz's a plant dried...28grams in an ouce so that 56 grams a plant with 9 plants that would be 504 grams...and there's 448g in a pound

I've always interpreted the m/2 predictions as 9 plants ... mainly because I see it as a 3 x 3 grid of 12" to 15" wide pots. I think its more for a SOG grow, 12/12'ing from seed. I'd rather grow 9 plants bigger per m/2, and get a larger yield from them - than introduce medium competition between a high number of smaller plants. But thats just the way I feel about it, the official method they use, or anyone elses, is down to how they feel etc.
That's essentially what I've been picking up on these threads. Although there are verified methods of growing, it's up to the grower to do whatever he wants. It is essential to retain certain knowledge though, so a noob like me has to do some reading before actually messing around. Haha

For sure! I'm just glad there's a medium where like minded people can share experiences and form a higher form of consciousness by connecting us some way or another. Causing somewhat of a ripple or wave through time and space.
Hello, not sure weather this still relevant, but when they say 500g/m2 thats usually achievable per the strain it described.
With something like critical +2.0 i managed to get 550g a square when they advertise it as 700. For the Super lemon haze i did 1kg per square even though they advertise it as being 800g/sq. So this is a measuring point of how much light should be given for a specific strain when going for maximum yield. And a number of plant plays no difference in here... More plants = shorter veg, less plants = longer veg. Simple. They still will have to cover the same space.
