I have a 400w HPS. Do I REALLY need CFL's to vedge?

i'm working with a 4 x 4 x 7 space, and i got a 400w HPS. Thinking about 3 nice sized plants..

First question is, Should i go for 3 and make them 3 larger plants? or go with 4 or even 6, and make them smaller.

Second, I know CFL's are what you wanna do for vedge, but can't i just slap that hps up there while its in root? What are the major cons its gonna have on the plant, aside from how fast it will grow. Just a question from a person who wants to learn. Thanks in advanced!

People use the cfl's because they can get it real close to the seedlings than a HPS. You put a hps next to some seedlings the way you can do it with a cfl and those seedlings will die.

in my opinioin with a 400 watt I would grow bigger plants...you can achieve the same yield and if your in the states you know less is better. as far as growing with the hps that fine...my first grow i just used cfls to sprout them the I used my hps to veg and flower...i hope that helps buddy

mysticclown is right though...if thats what your gonna do make sure your easy introducing them to that hps...it will dry their ass's out within 30 min to an hour or maybe less!

I may just get 4 or so cfl's to vedge, but When i slap the 400w hps on them, can i just hang those other CFL's lower on the plant, once the fan leaves start coming home? or should i not worry cause it will reflect enough..

i have grown both with veg time and straight 12/12 from seed and clone.

all have +/-'s

i'd do 1 or 2 big and fill the rest with 12/12er's,

Warning they do get big.

veg to 20"ish to 18"

12/12 from seed about 1 and a half weeks to harvest.

she was 42.8 grams dry weight.
