I never said you said it... I said it.. and I am say it again...:eyesmoke:

I appreciate you LM... even if make the hairs on my back stand up on occasion...

I respect you, your grow and your ideas...

You are always welcome here...

But you know that I hate sugar coating shit...

And so...

That's a pretty good little point and shoot... it's even water proof to 30 feet on it's own...:eyesmoke:

Good for when I drop it in the res...:dunce::lol::clap:

Here I was just messing around with the camera and took these. I figured out how to use the zoom but I want to try taking shots without the flash as well. It isnt my camera so Im not quite sure how it works.
Wow, nice man those look way better.

You are going to have to change the white balance setting to see if your camera has some kind of pre-set rating that matches close-ish with HPS when you take pics under the light. (That probably sounded like a bunch of technical jargon, sorry)

can't ask for much better than that for a point and shoot though..

is that white berry?

Yes, whiteberry about a week from done. I'll see what I can do about the white balance. Then take some new photos tomorrow.

Well Gypsy I've been browsing around a little, reading many threads by some reallyreally talented growers. Dewey's setup is beautiful, Blaze gets more bud out of one plant than I ever would have thought possible, and Heath... ah, Heath. OMG, I just dont know what to say about some of the things he's doing. Fucking amazing is an understatement by far. And I havent even read Al B. yet!

In short, I am overwhelmed. I don't know what kind of setup I want to run now... not a clue.

OK...

seems like you want me to say something about it... I hope you're ready for it...:eyesmoke:

I'll use this picture for an example...

The FIRST THING that SCREAMS at me is the hair...

Hair is a big nono in bud porn... a big nono I have been guilty of plenty of times... but still a nono...

The second thing I can say about it is that you were too close to your subject (if in fact you were trying to get a shot of the top of the bud, as I am ASSuMEing...:eyesmoke:)

If you had backed up just a little bit, you would have moved your focus point from where it sits now, and bring the subject into focus...

Focusing is relative to distance...

Not all of most macro shots are in focus...

So you need to learn how to place your focus point in a place where YOU want it... but also in a way that it will focus...

After you get what you think might be an OK shot.. with a decent area in sharp focus...

Open it with an image editing software... or even do one of them screen grab things...

And basically zoom in as much as you can with the computer... and crop it.. or snap a digital picture of it with your computer...:eyesmoke:

I'm so ignorant...:lol: I don't know what it's called...:lol::dunce:

But I think you get what I mean...

Zoom in and snap a shot of that zoomed in image...

I'll give you an example of that... I love this picture...

See any similarities???:eyesmoke::shock::lol:

Well...

I can give you two clues...

The first is my opinion...

I believe you are a PRIME CANDIDATE FOR A COMPLETE HOLD ON YOUR PROJECT...:-(

Just until you figure out EXACTLY what YOU want to do...

Buy the last res you will ever buy...

Buy the last light you will ever buy...

But for that.. you GOTTA KNOW WHAT YOU WANT...

So for your wallet's sake I hope you hold off until you "feel" the light come on upstairs...;-)

My second clue is a thread...

One I have read and reread many times and I believe EVERYONE SHOULD!!!

Here.. let me quit boring you with all the advice I shouldn't give, but my ego can't refuse...

I give you my Master.. in his own words...

https://www.rollitup.org/newbie-central/12071-noobs-if-you-fail-plan.html

Far, FAR too many noobs decide to grow weed, plant seeds and then go build the grow op. As a bit of an afterthought, these same noobs will then skim over a grow guide and have some coarse idea of how cannabis grows, perhaps have a vague idea of what a plant in veg and flower might be.

No.

Nononononono.

Please don't do this. It's like blowing half-dozen bonghits and then going out looking for the party.

There's lots of knowledgeable ppl around this board, but if you do try to grow without first acquiring basic cannabis plant knowledge, planning the scale of your op and building the physical op facilities- BEFORE you even THINK about dampening a seed, you make the catch-up work for your mentor/s MUCH harder.

If you're going to grow, you may as well grow as much as you can smoke. Micro grows are certainly possible but a 1-2 plant closet or cabinet grow just won't make much weed, even if you're using the highest performance lighting and watering system available.

Noobs should plan on 1/4-1/2 oz per plant. Experienced growers will get 3/4-1oz per plant in a SoG operation. If you smoke 1/4oz a week, noob growers would need to harvest 1-2 plants a week or 2-4 plants every 2 weeks in a 2-week rotation style SoG op. It's up to you to then decide how many plants you'll need to grow to suit your smoking needs. When you know how many plants you need to grow, plan on giving each plant an 8-12" circle to live in. SoG style growing means pruning off all branches on the lower 1/3 of the plant, leaving only the mainstem with a big fat top cola and some nice golfball sized buds on the mainstem itself. The lower branches produce only small, wispy buds and restrict airflow around the plant, crowding other plants, so you may as well not grow that part of the plant at all. For the SOG style of plant, an 8-12" circle is plenty. Plan on around 40-50 watts of HPS light per square foot of flowering space.

Minimum requirements for a functional grow op (one that will yield enough to be worth doing, i.e. at least an oz or two every cpl weeks) include a clonebox, a mother plant vegging area and a flowering area. You can keep as little as one mother, but more mothers is an insurance policy. I keep 6-8 mothers to provide 30 cuttings every 2 weeks. Divide up your available space accordingly and work out how you're going to keep light from the clone and mother areas from interrupting the 12 hour dark period of the flowering plants.

The next consideration is the location of the op. You need to be able to ventilate the space- and that does NOT mean leaving a closet door open part of the day. We're talking about intake and exhaust fans with appropriate ducting to avoid recycling 'used' air back into the op. If you can't install proper ventilation, you will have high air temps and high humidity- which will give you low yields and other problems such as powdery mildew which can simply kill the plants outright.

The space needs to have enough airflow to both remove heat from the lighting, moisture in the air put there by the plants and provide adequate CO2 for the plants. This means a ventilation system that will exchange the entire volume of the room air in about 3-5 mins max. Work out your room volume by multiplying room length x width x height and then go shopping for exhaust fans based on that figure. A 1000 cubic foot room needs a 200 CFM (cubic foot/min) exhaust fan. If you can't ventilate the space, you can't grow in it.

The floor needs either to be a durable surface like concrete or tile or must be protected against water leaks and spills. An old waterbed liner under your grow will do OK if there's no holes in it.

Grow room fires are usually caused by stupidly overloading electric circuits or using cheap power outlet strips on high-current devices. KNOW how many watts you're drawing and how many you can safely draw from each circuit. LEARN how to calculate watts from your line voltage and the amount of current (in Amps) your gear will use. (watts = volts * amps). Smart growers only use 80% of a circuit's capacity (i.e. 8 amps on a 10 amp ckt)

If you're going to do hydro, you MUST have a nutrient meter (measures nute strength in ppm, CF or EC) and a pH meter. You get what you pay for. Cheap meters don't last long and are often inaccurate. I use the "Truncheon" nute meter and Eutech brand pH meters, both which last many years with no worries.

Don't fear hydro. If you can follow some basic procedures, hydro is more reliable than potting soil and will ALWAYS yield more. For my hydro media, I use rockwool in pots. It's cheap, lightweight, sterile and easy to dispose of. Soil weighs 10x more than rockwool. If you're growing a number of plants, the amount of soil you need quickly becomes cumbersome.

You MUST have a good thermometer/hygrometer in your growspaces. Digital thermo/hygros with peak memories are very cheap these days- and you will KNOW what goes on in the room.

You don't need recirculating plumbing to do hydro- you can use a wick system, which just has a bit of rope leading from the bottom of your plant's pot into a tank of nute solution. The water & nutes wick up the rope & wet the media as the plant removes the water. However, recirculating systems like flood/drain (aka ebb/flow) and drip system can carry more dissolved oxygen to the plant's roots. Aero and NFT systems are better yet. I use a flood system because there's no drippers or sprayers to clog with dried nute salts.

A grow op must be designed to maintain certain environmental conditions (24-27 deg C @ 30-50% humidity), but it also conceals your op. It must not permit any light leakage and it must not attract attention with scent or noises. Scent control is best done with big blower fans and carbon filters or UV ionisers. Ionisers are expensive to buy but run for years with no maintenance. In addition to killing scents, they also kill mould spores in grow room air. Don't put your op in a place where you can be seen entering and leaving if you can avoid it. If neighbours can see you coming and going, they will notice you eventually. Know them as well as they know you and go in/out when they're not around or automate your op so you need not go in every day.

Do your homework before posting queries:

  • KNOW how the cannabis plant grows with regard to cuttings and how light cycle affects veg & flower modes.
  • KNOW the temperature and humidity figures you need to provide to the plant. You should run a freshly built op with no plants in it for a week or so and see how it does with noise, temps, etc.
  • KNOW that your proposed location meets the basic physical requirements for power, ventilation and temp control, security and accessibility.
  • BUY the basic equipment- especially good metering gear- and have it ready to go before you sprout anything.
  • Have a GOOD idea of how many plants you need to grow and build your space to suit. It's easier to overbuild now and grow a smaller number of plants than will fill the space than to try to expand an op later.
Yes- setting up a COMPETENT grow op (not some silly goofaround thing) requires a little investment, but it'll pay you back many, many times over. Avoid the temptation to buy "packages" from hydro shops- you will spend several times as much as you would if you take the time to learn what is needed and buy things to suit from other vendors. 95% of what you need for a grow op can be had at hardware and aquarium shops.

Now go to it!

I've been pretty avid into photography for a while and I've got ~ $3000 invested in the dslr equipment I'm using right now. Favorite lens is my f2.8 fisheye...

I'd like to add, my camera doesn't even have a flash, and I doubt I will ever buy one... ;p
I worked with a professor dude that had a sweet set up...

Same as you no flash allowed...

His small camera was a Hasslblad...

The big one... the one I got to CARRY! .. the negatives were 11"x14" glass sheets with B&W emulsion on it...

But the pictures of the Grand Canyon he took were magical...:eyesmoke:

Never did see the professor dude again though...

Here is another worthy post from Mr. Fuct...

Get a harvest every 2 weeks

This style of op is known as 'Sea of Green' or SoG.

You can build this op in any scale you like, from a single mother and just one plant put in to the flowering area every two weeks up to as big as your needs require.

The idea is to grow only the top cola of a naturally growing plant with none of the lower branches and the small buds those branches produce. All branching, pretty much everything on the lower 1/3 of the plant, is snipped off in about wk 2 & 3.

Plant at 6 wks flowering, note lower branching is removed

The method of putting clones in to flower with no vegging time keeps plants relatively short, to about 36-40" (1 metre), which better suits artificial lighting.

Even powerful HPS lighting can only penetrate foliage so deeply, so a metre tall is just about right. I find that big lights give better bud density, so I use two 1000W HPS, one over each pair of 4' x 4' flood trays.

The mums are maintained under 24 hour 400W HPS. The clonebox has 6x 18W fluoro tubes (24"), usually on 24/7 but shut off for the first 6-8 hours after doing a new batch of cuttings.

Clones go straight from the clonebox into the flowering trays- no vegging required. They grow a little bit vegetatively for the first 3-4 weeks but then stop getting taller and start making bud weight after then.

I keep about 6-8 mothers and do about 30 cuttings every 2 weeks from them. I choose the best 20-23 clones to be put in the 4-tray flowering area.

Leftover clones become replacement mothers or are discarded. Mothers are replaced one by one, about every 4-8 weeks as needed.

As each batch of clones goes in to tray #1, a batch comes out of tray #4 to be harvested, every 2 weeks.

The mother vegging area is in the same room with the flowering plants, but has a lightproof curtain to prevent interrupting the flowering plants' light cycle and has its own ventilation system as well. Each tray in both the veg & flower areas has its own pump, reservoir tank and timer, allowing the watering rate and nute mix to be tailored to the plant for vegging as well as during each 2 week phase of flowering.

See my gallery for pics of the op in action as well as pix of clones in rockwool cubes and clonebox details.

*************************************

ERRATA:

I have not had to use imperial figures in many years. When I wrote this post, I estimated the size of the flood trays as 4'x4'. I estimated WRRRONG! They are actually 900x900mm or about 35.4" square.

Somewhere in this thread I also estimate that the pots used are 8" dia- wrong again. They are 175mm top diameter, 130mm bottom dia and 175mm tall. They hold approximately 4L of media.

Despite our traditional love of pounds and ounces, cannabis growers should learn to love the metric system. It is infinitely easier to manage litres and ml than it is to deal with gallons, ounces and worst, teaspoons, the size of which changes from country to country.

Hey alb,
sorry to bug ya but just to clear things up,
Heres a pic of one of my plants at 2-3 weeks flower I trimmed the bottom 1/3

I drew some red lines where i SHOULD cut as well? If i cut all these branches off that are longer then 1 in. I will just have basically the main stem ( hopfully thats what i want?)

Thanks a whole bunch

Well I guess I have read some Al B.... definitely read the Noobs: If you plan to fail... plan to fail! before, and I just read it again.

I'm definitely a candidate for putting the whole op on hold. It is on hold, has been, and will be for some time. Gathering info, compiling a shopping list, going slow...

Appreciate the posts and links man.

What type of lighting do you need to take shots like that?
I have to take close ups like that, even though my plants will never be that covered in trichs. Its okay to dream though

Hahahaha!!!

Tom! You know that's just a fluke... I can't do that every time... I'm not consistent enough... yet!;-)

That shot was taken under the one CFL in the living room and the camera's flash...

I use a little LED light a lot of times instead of the flash too...

You just gotta play around with the camera settings,etc... you'll get it...

Hell, if I can do it...:roll: ... :lol::eyesmoke:

Yeah, nothing but props for AL and all the information he has shared.
I think his "how not to grow dope" thread should be required reading for anyone wanting to start a marijuana garden.
I don't use his system exactly (I hate rockwool.) but I've definitely modeled my grow pretty closely after his, and without his no-nonsense approach to growing (keep it simple stupid) and all of his informational threads, I'd probably still be a pure dirt head just out of fear.
It won't be long before I'm only using soil for tomatos.

Hey Gypsy... your setup based on Fuct's "Harvest every 2 weeks" thread?

I got overwhelmed earlier, checking out too many different growing methods at once, most of them the expert-level huge-yielding type. Got my feet back on the ground now (I think).

The 600W Digi HID we talked about will be the lighting, found a really nice grow tent (finally... lots of crap out there) thats perfect for my dimensions, inline fan and ducting for exhaust, timers, yada yada so on and so forth. All the essentials, calculated for my grow space and conditions, are pretty much accounted for. Probably go a round with it and then maybe add co2 depending on how things are looking. I'm just trying to decide what kind of hydro/aero setup to go with, and thats the hard part for me.

BTW, if you find a minute to look, what do you think of this? Price seems fair if it really does everything its supposed to do.
