Tap root growing up through the surface!

This is weird.

My seed successfully germinated and I carefully planted it about 1cm deep with the tap root pointing up as recommended.

I returned home to check on my baby to find that he tap root has grown up out of the soil and has begun to arch back into the soil. I thought that this is what it is supposed to do BUT under the surface. Is this normal? I had assumed that it was not supposed to break the surface.

Reading that light is not good for the root I sprinkled some soil over in the hope that things will be ok; that the root will grow back into the soil and flip the top of the plant up out of the surface as it is supposed to.

Slightly worried.

yeah i think somone told you wrong the tap root should grown down.... one good reason NOT to germinate in a papertowl/napkin if you germinate them in a peat pot/plug or rockwool more than likely you will transplant it green side up

i wouldn't have put the tap root facing upwards to begin with, but that's just me, it should be fine though just cover it with more dirt and wait til it pops up

I've read that the tap root automatically changes direction once it's planted and then seeks to grow down. In fact the famous Mr Green video states that it must be planted pointy end up. If you plant pointy end down then it has to make two directional changes (the initial auto turn and then realising it's mistake another turn to grown straight down) and this wastes valuable energy at this stage. Hopefully it will sort itself out.

ive read (on this site i believe) that your supposed to put the seed in with the root up or sideways so i understand why he did it.. thou ive never heard of that happening before

You plant the tap root down into the soil. That is the way to do it. If it was correct to plant it tap root up than the root wouldn't have grown out of the ground. Plant your tap roots down into the soil or medium with the seed shell on top. There is not other way, this is the standard

no, you are very wrong. u want it pointing down! change directions isnt a problem if u plant them facing down because then it grows straight down.

what wastes valuable energy is germinating them in a paper towel to begin with just put the seeds in dirt and keep them humid FFS simple horticulture the plants will grow towards the sun :cuss:

FallenBuckshot what makes you think that germinating the seed in a paper towel wastes energy? I have always germinated my seeds and I never once had a problem with it. The growth was never slow or anything. I call bullshit on your made up information. Don't spread false information

but nature doesnt always plant point down, plant them in soil just drop them in and let nature do the rest.
I think I will be doing this from now on. I now believe that planting pointy end up will make the tap root break through the surface if the root is over a certain length and planted too shallow. Now it's done it's U-turn I just need to protect it from the light. Hopefully not to much stress for the little girl.

The seed with the root pointed down sprouted in 5 days and the seed with the root pointing up sprouted in six. The tap root is planted pointing down, it makes no sense whatsoever to plant it any other way

Paper towel germinator for 13 years here, never a problem :-) Don't worry too much, nature will correct itself its really no big deal it happens sometimes especially when you're planting a number of seeds. It will be just fine :-)
