Was at home depot the other day and saw they had 400W MH bulbs for $30. My question is do u think I could use a 400W MH bulb in my 400W HPS set up?

Also does MH burn as hot as HPS?

Thank you for your help

No Mh does not get no where near as hot as HPS....And i am almost positive u can use either bulb....it should be a 400w setup not just primarily hps..I would just plug it in and check it out if it doesnt work ur gonna need another bulb at some point anyways...maybe a pic would help to show me ur ballast and light

noyou can not use it mh needs a diff ballast you can use a mh conversion bulb which is a mh bulb made to run on a hps ballast they have conversion that go both ways

luck to you my brother

If you have a 400w HPS setup, then you will need a 400W metal halide CONVERSION BULB! Don't go plugging in a regular metal halide bulb... fire hazard.

I'm well aware of marketing schemes. Is this one of them?... I don't know, but I wouldn't take a chance on having my house burn down over a few extra dollars. Conversion bulb for the win in my opinion...

Btw I respect everyone's opinion.

Do not do this.
Unless your ballast is a CONVERSION ballast (HPS to MH) then you cannot just put another type of light into it. The ballasts are different. BAD BAD IDEA!

now now people no need to argue, I appreciate the advice thats why i ask before i try something dumb or good. What would be the diff in the ballast, I thought it was just a diff in the bulb.

All HID lighting runs on the same principal. some bulbs and ballast combos just plain wont fire. I think it has something to to with pulse vs probe start. Electronics will fire most anything you throw at it. Its common practice to run Mercery Vapor bulbs (Iwasaki 6500K is by definition a Mercery vapor bulb) in MH ballast for reef tanks. The same exact bulb is marketed as a HPS bulb for horticulture use. Running a diffrerent type of bulb and ballast combos will afect how the bulb is ran, it can affect PAR, and color rendering index. If someone wanted $60 for a converstion bulb and there was a cheap MH bulb for $20. I would run the cheaper one. Yes it might not get all the power of the conversion bulb, but it will not be much of a diffrence is neglageable to justify the extra $40. It will still burn blue and white in color which is what you want to achive. Do a test run for a day to make sure your temp of ballast is still considered normal just for safety.
