Just a basic thing to mask IP address. Not as safe as your regular connection as all the information is viewable by anyone they just can't connect it unless you use credit card #'s and whatever and your name. IE don't do it. Your regular connection however is easily accesible by your ISP tor does get around this.
Someone brought to my attention tor also runs it's own DNS server as well.
You should run a TOR server client as well. One important thing you need to know is that if your afraid of the news stories of tor client servers getting raided you should click the TOR EXIT POLICY and unclick all the exits. Then you are only running a intermediary server which speeds up and make TOR more secure.

Encrypted internet connection
You can use this for whatever and have neither your ISP nor anyone randomly viewing your internet activity.

Follow the instructions to change your DNS for your encrypted connection or just for your regular connection if you want to only use your regular connection without tor or a proxy. Most of this is general computer security.
You can use your encrypted connection along with tor which is ideal for surfing sites like this and posting anywhere for anon. It will also if you don't want to change your exit nodes you won't have to worry about getting raided either as you are sharing your encrypted internet connection essentially which if enough people do this will make TOR as secure as secure gets.
Than use your encrypted connection with the TOR button on firefox to do your normal business everyday where you need a solid IP address but want privacy.
Keep in mind if you use TOR with your encrypted connection your first connection to tor will be encrypted but after that it won't be so keep in mind the first rules of tor apply as stated.
Good Virus software is a must.

This will change your MAC ID for your modem and or wireless adapter.
Feds I read mostly only watch MAC ID's. I read about hard drive MAC clones but that none work at the moment that I know of.
Which brings me to encryption of your hard drive because now we know it's not safe.
If you want to store you nice bud pics somewhere without it being used against you in the future or business information.

Free program 256 bit encryption. You need to use a long password written down so you wont' remember it if you for some unknown reason dispose of it with a lighter you have handy. Otherwise 256 encryption is useless if you dont' do a random long password.
Use it to encrypt your whole hard drive. It is a nice new feature especially for a free software. It will also encrypt any external hard drives and usb drives.
One more thing to stop hackers.
It's different for windows xp and vista.
windows xp. click start: click control panel: click network internet connections: click network connections: you will have 1 or two active internet connections one will be you modem do this for all your connections. left click to highlight: right click: click properties: scroll down click tcp/ip to highlight windows vista will be v4 or v6 I think its v6 just trial and error it cuz I can't remember I hate vista: click properties: click advanced: click wins: click disable tcp/ip over internet: done
Enjoy the almost free total computer security. You can adapt it if you want to be totally free or pay total $20 bucks a month for more secure.
If anyone has anything else to add please do. I accumulated this by reading alot and adding it all together. Hopefully it will help out and be easy to understand and do.
Thanks
