light too close??? what are the signs??

i was just wondering what everyone else has their 1000 watt HPS height at? my hood ia a wing type reflector, i was tol.d 18 inches, i have right now some budding plants at about 20-24 inches from tops. everything looks ok their, anyone here ever have them at like 18 inches, or lower, with a simular reflector as mine(wing type)?? And....what would the signs be on my plant of the light being too close???

The signs that the light was too close is usually plant damage. It's not worth lowering the light to find out, especially in bud, because if the bud is damaged it's going to be stunted.
