 I just set up a grow room that is about 2x6 and the ceiling is about 8 feet. I put 2 400 wat MH lights in the room and each light has a seperate ballast. The first date that the lights were ever turned on was july 14- and there on a 18/6 light cycle. I get the bill today ( august 5) and its 500$ when it usually is 150$!!! Do these lights really rank up the bill this much or coulkd it be somthing else thats doing it??. Please help and put input of what i should do. Do you think one 400 watt mh would cover the 2x6 room? I have a seperate HP when it comes to flowering also.

i dont think you need to have 2 of those hoods in that little space. not for that price anyways. of you wanted u could hang some cfls down for extra lighting? at a cheaper price

WTF. Look at you bill and tell us what your charge per KW/hr is and what you total usage was. There should be to numbers, last months usage and this months usage.

In a nutshell, no 400watts of light should not cost $350

Also if the cops read the bill and see a huge difference in KW this could lead me to a bust correct? I only have 10 1 foot plants,

I wouldn't worry about it now, it's summer.
Most people are running their AC units all day long 24/7.
I'm sure their electric bills are much higher then yours.

But $500. That's a bit high.
Maybe you forgot to pay your bill last month.

How could your buds be lanky with 1 400 watt hps. A plant under those lights will always have great buds. 500 for electricity is outrageous. Good luck

2x6 room 10 plants, it seems that one 400 watter wouldnt fill the room with light. Whats everyones bill with your lights added on?

A single 400 won't cover the 6ft length well. I have a sing 400 over a 2x4 area and it is just barely enough.
When you are looking for the big energy consumer, these are the top three:
A/C
Hot water heater
Clothes Dryer (This is actually #1, but usually doesn't get used as much as the AC)
You may also want to check with your power co and see if they have recently replaced your meter. Alot of companies are upgrading to smart meters and it is causing problems with billing right after. My buddy just got a $750 bill (twice the normal bill) after they swapped meters.

A 400w covers a 3 x 2.5" area. sure if you like loose popcorn buds cut back, or switch to CFL lol

$500 is a bit much, but half the additional is the lights, and at least half is A/C to cool the lights and ballast heat.

Plus everybody's rates are going up.

Taxes trickles down just like tax cuts trickle up, so rates are going much higher under Obama, and the Democrats in Congress

Why? "The nation's fleet of over 100 coal plants is responsible for 57 percent of the electricity generated in the U.S"

"Obama coal tax plan concerns industry leaders"

Electric Rates Soar

U.S. utilities are raising power prices up to 29% to counter rising fuel costs, USA Today reports.
In Virginia, Potomac Edison plans to raise rates 29% on July 1. AmerenUE, Missouri’s largest utility, has asked for a 12.1% boost, Public Service Co. of Oklahoma hiked rates 25% on June 1.
The price of coal has doubled since last year, largely because of surging energy use in countries such as China and India. Natural gas prices are up nearly 50%. The cost to build a power plant doubled since 2000.
And with federal legislation anticipated by 2010, even more dramatic rate increases could be ahead."

The price of coal has doubled, because Obama has promised to bankrupt the coal industry.

YOU DECIDE: Will Obama Bankrupt the Coal Industry?

here in cali if u go over a certain KW they charge u double the price. i run a 1000 + 400, the 1000 watt runs 12 hours and the 400 was running 18 and my bill jumped 150 a month. i am also running 12000 btu ac for 8 hours a day, my central air runes like it normally dose. u should look in to programs they have if any to lower ur bill. last year my wife and i went to montana for 2 weeks. well they closed out the account we had, it was in her x"s name, i got a 500 dollar bill for 2 weeks, we werent even home. this shit went on for 5-6 month by this time i owed 3,000 dollars. we finally compared bills and their was different rates and account numbers. we called them and they told us that it was because we started a new account, suprized as hell i told her we didnt know anything about it and the rate changed. we were on a care plane that was a lot lower rate. so they switched to to the program. i asked them why they didnt say anything about this program to began with, they said that ant are job to tell u about special programs. there janeky fuckers they is.

Okay so i estimated that one 400 watt mh light on 18 hours a day should cost about 20 dollars a month tops- is this correct?
