Metal Halide Lighting Question

Hello,
I am a new grower and have a lighting question!
I am using a 400W Metal Halide bulb to grow my plants and am unsure how far away i should keep the bulb from the plants. Rigth now i am about 20-24 inches above but i know i can be closer than that. Im afraid of burning the plants because this bulb throws a lot of heat. Other posts say to use your hand under the bulb to see if its too hot and right now i feel no heat on the plants but i want to get the bulb closer because i thnk im wasting a lot of light potential. My plants are about 6 inches tall right now in the veg stage. Anyone have any suggestions?
thanks

Ok i will try closer, i was thinking 20 inshes was a bit much. Is a little warmth ok or should i try and have 0 heat?

Another question...how many plants is one 400W MH able to support?
i grow 2 at a time, i have a fairly tall space so i let my girls get big. i have grown 4 at once and they did alright, i get more off 2 big ones than 4 small ones:peace:

so i had a little mishap last night....
one of the peices of foil fell off the wall of my room and covered the plants for about 10 hours...
i know im, an idiot....but the plants seem to be ok. There is a little bit of yellow on the tp leaves where they are a little withered, but other than that they seem to still be ok.
anyone have any suggestions or comments that might help the plants come back strong?
thanks

It will come back without any help.

I like flat white paint even more now, because it doesn't fall of and cover the plant thanks! J/K

a small 400 watter wont be real hot well its hot to touch but in the overall picture not real hot. The hand palm down at the top of the plants til just uncomfortable then up 2 inches is a good way to go. A 400 watt light in a decent reflector will cover a grow area of 3 feet by 3 feet so what ever you can fit in there and depedns on how you grow the exact numbers
