how does a marijuana bud turn purple?

i have heard many different theories about this. Ive heard that if u lower the temperature during the flowering temperature the plant will begin to turn purple. Ive also heard that a product called "Purple Maxx" will turn the buds purple as well. any opinions?

some strains have it in their genetics and some dont....just about all plants in nature have these pigments and cool temp/fall season makes these pigments appear.....anthocyanin pigment causes purpleness and cytokynin pigment causes red /orangeness
fall season/cooler temps cause the breakdown of chlorophyll and release these pigments

drop the temp below 15 and they will get a purple leaves and some of the hairs will turn but not really purple purple.. if you want purple get some purple strains,. dont shock the plant unless you just want to have some fan the last day.

you need to get to temps between 50-60.... a good way to achieve this is to water your plants with snow or ice cubes the last 2 or 3 times before harvest...

There are plants with natural purple pigments and there are plants that undergo phosphorus deficiency. Phosphorus is silly in that slightly low temperatures will cause it's metabolism by the plant to halt. pH fluctuations and nutrient lockout due to high levels of nitrogen can also cause phosphorus deficiencies.

One super easy way to stress a plant into going purple it to just change the pH.

5.5 and lower for soil plants generally does it.

i know you posted this ages ago but have you tried this or know anyone who has? anyone els ever herd of this? would purple food colouring have the same effect? ​

This isn't exactly true. While genetics certainly play a major role, you can induce purple coloration on strains that are not predisposed to it. One thing to clarify about the temperature that people keep getting wrong here; it's your NIGHT temps that will bring out these pigments. If your night time temps are 15 degrees cooler than daytime, with a max of 65 degrees, you can bring out the purple pigments in many strains. I've even done this with Super Lemon Haze to good effect. This can also be accomplished (though I don't recommend) by inducing a phosphorus deficiency.

Having said that, there are many strains that are naturally purple and don't need any environmental factors to bring it out. There are also many strains that will not turn purple no matter how hard you try.
