I think this is rockwool is probably the most popular hydroponic medium next to hydroton pebbles. rockwool is versatile also. you can germinate in rockwool and propagate clones with it. When your plant takes off in the original rockwool plug you can then slip it into a larger peice of rockwool. Rockwool is cheap and can be bought in large quantity. The shipping is also cheaper for rockwool compared to hydroton because it weighs less.
Perlite is a good medium and can be bought enxpensively, good drainage, good exchange of gases. Not sure about cloning with perlite though. I would still reccomend a rockwool plug for clones.
Compressed coconut fiber plugs can also be used to clone, but I think they are to dense to be used as a primary hydroponic medium.

ahh, thats what I thought initially, but your name... well ok; the soil of choice seems to the Foxfarm ocean forest. Its got all the best stuff in it, kinda like snapple. If you want to make you own custom blend. you could start with something like a high grade potting soil, then add bat gauno, worm castings, perlite, pete moss. That would be a good mix. Anything that is a natural fetilizer and keeps the soil light and airy so roots grow fast and water drains well.

there are plenty of soil brands, im not gonna name them all, but if your gonna use MG potting soil or anything with nutes in the soil already make sure you pull out the little nute balls for your seedlings. when you transplant when the plants stronger then its ok to use the nuteballs, but MG potting soil is notorius for killing seedlings
a soil less mix is a mix of pearlite vermiculite and peat and/or sphagnum moss. its practicly hydro, but not at the same time

As far as hydroponic medium I use rockwool(to start the seedlings/clones) and hydroton(to plant rooted seedlings/clones) in a ebb and flow setup. Works well to get air to the roots and is fairly easy and inexpensive. I have only eve rused GH but want to try AN soon too. Maybe a side by side plant comparison.
With dirt I would buy a good potting mix from the local garden store and add what is needed to it.
1 Bale mix (3.8 cu ft)
8 cups Bone Meal - phosphorus source
4 cups Blood Meal - nitrogen source
1 1/3 cups Epsom salts - magnesium source
3-4 cups dolmite lime -calcium source & pH buffering
1 tsp trace elements
4 cups kelp meal.
9kg (25 lbs) bag pure worm castings
Mix thoroughly, moisten, and let sit 1-2 weeks before use.

That's beautiful soil but how easy is it for a new grower to find all those ingredients? You also have to think about cost involved in buying all those ingredients. I'd say a bag of Foxfarm Ocean Forest is probably the best bang for your buck and it is still a little on the expensive side. With Ocean forest you probably don't even need to add nutes until flower, then I would add Foxfarm Tiger Bloom. I have never personally used Foxfarm but everyone here says its the best soil... I will probably buy a bag of MG potting mix, then dilute it with pete moss, organic blend and perlite. I will prolly use low dose MG fertilizer for veg, and maybe get a quart of Tiger Bloom for flower. You don't need to break the bank to make good soil. Just be thoughtful of what goes into it.

i use biobizz soil and it says it has consists of 20% sphagnum peat moss, 35% garden peat, 10% high quality organic worm manure, 30% perlite and 5% Pre-Mix.
