My very first grow was under 2 x 42 watt (150w incandescent equivalent) warm white 2700k cfl's. I had 3 plants, vegged them till they were about 14" tall then started flowering. I got about 14g of dry bud from that tiny grow. No nutrients, just water and some worm castings.
Usually I would say it isn't worth it to grow that small, but for a first grow I must say I learned a lot and I really didn't have to worry about losing much yield trying something new. Growing small for the first time isn't that bad. But, if you want to go with easy to buy CFLs, go to home depot or lowes and get 2 or 3 of the 70w (300w incandescent equivalent) warm white cfls. You will get much more yield and the heat/price isn't a big factor.
I recommend the larger cfls because if you ever decide to got with HPS in the future, you can always retire those bulbs to the vegging room and they will still do nicely.
