I'm glad this is being addressed. I mean, I can take my fair share of abuse, but it's getting down right juvenile around here.

I'm someone who has a great deal of knowledge to offer the novice and experienced grower alike. Someone who not only has the conventional knowledge, but also years of experience and a lot of those "little tricks" that people are always looking for. Someone with pragmatic solutions and the heart of a teacher. Someone who has discovered that the philosophy of "Less is More" in the field of botany and horticulture is the key to the ultimate end result.

But to be honest, I got "fuck you'd" so much about any disagreement at all, I just stopped helping people.

They say that civility is the lubricant of society. And I say that it's a gauge of parenting skills.
I long ago learned that online forums where there is controversy are a magnet for passive-aggressives. People who wouldn't raise the voice in the real world go ape when it's anonymous. So don't throw the baby out with the bathwater. I used to try to help everyone I could and I still do but more and more I pick out posters who seem adult and spend more time with them by PM. By the way I have a real need for some good tips!

Hallelujah!

I'll help point out errors(they're numerous) in the grow FAQs if you like. ;)
grow faqs aren't rules. but i get where you're coming from. i'll let rollitup know you want to help. we have a thread in the mod section that i am throwing all your names into for now. once we figure out where we are goign we can refer back to the list. this has been in the works for 3 years now so it may or may not take off. :leaf:

Good advice, Illegal Smile, we ought to just avoid the name callers.

I wish the rule was GIVE A WARNING, or a 2nd chance to delete the name calling post or infraction. I've seen a couple good members justly but sadly banned that were helpful to newbies, and good posters, but lost their cool, and started a rant of name calling (like Pot Pimp) and rude posts. At least give them a chnce to back down and cool off.
Some newbies don't read or know the rules and ought to get a Warning..
A Warning and a request to edit the infraction would be a great move toward Peace and Harmony here, and would limit the bannings and thread closings. I also wish long time members got some slack or mercy.

Thanks Fdd2blk, for at least this post letting us all know what is going on.

Did RIU have any other news or ideas you can share with us?
How is the ELITE Donations and Fund Drive for donations going?

I don't know about the name-calling because I have not been a member long enough to have been attacked. But as a new face around here I immediately noticed far too many posts that belong in a chat room, not a forum. I admit that I have fallen into the same habit and will be correcting it. I'm refering to the fact that you have important topics being discussed that turn into a zillion pages of posts because of inane banter that contributes nothing to the subject being discussed. Again, I'm guilty of it too, but it sure makes it hard to read complete threads when there are 60 pages of zingers and attaboys mixed in with the good stuff. Maybe what rollitup needs is a chat room designated as UFC where folks can go duke it out "no holds barred" style without being banned.

.....and noticed that someone has finally gotten fed up with the pointless abusive posts. discussions on politics, like those concerning religion, are apt to become heated because of the passions they evoke, but common abuse relays nothing and disrupts the give and take of rational discussion. one of the main reasons my posts here have slowed down to an almost imperceptible trickle (aside from having little time to just sit and relax lately) is that i grew bored with responses that amounted to little more than an only slightly more literate version of "you're a big fat doody head".

cannabis related forums represent a relatively accurate, though slightly liberal leaning, cross-section of the public at large. weeds calming effect renders us less likely to yield to the violent nature of the society around us and, bound by a common respect, if not love, for the venerable herb, we should be able to air our differences without resorting to the vicious tendencies so prevalent in the world of politics. i might suggest that everyone attempt to follow a very simple rule that i adhere to religiously. never enter the forum without at least a couple of bong hit to relieve the tensions of the day and soften the rough edges we seem to accumulate by existing in this savage world. a joint before posting seems to lessen the urgency of the world's dilemmas and provides a more philosophical outlook on even the weightiest of problems.

many folks that post in this sub-forum have succumbed to that childish desire to engage in meaningless invective at one time or another (i know i have) and i'm sure that no amount of moderation will do away with it completely, but it's nice to see that someone is going to at least attempt to tone it down a bit. most forums that i have frequented that are not strictly concerning politics consider the political forum a sort of free fire zone where tempers are allowed to flare a bit beyond the bounds of common civility. with restrictions loosened, they are usually not a place for the faint hearted or thin skinned and that's probably as it should be. it can be hard to remember that the true scumbags of this world are few and far between and the anonymity of an online community makes it easy to imagine that your opponent represents the worst of an ideology that you are dead set against. i do hope that any new restrictions won't completely do away with the fervor inherent political debate and look forward to the time when i have the leisure to renew my association with y'all.

Most well written post I've ever seen on this site REPS+ to you undertheice

I agree that no amount of policing will stop all abusive behavior on this board, but I would rather err on the side of caution when it comes to policing peoples speech.

I like the fact that just about anything goes here, except name calling and personal attacks.

I read the whole forum rules and I agree that there shouldnt be any name calling here. I am a new member and I did not sign up to be harassed. I hope RIU handles them correctly though. Some comments may be taken way out of context also. So one must er on the side of caution as well.

I don't know about you guys, but when I see personal attacks I report them. Hopefully the people get infractions and learn their lesson, if not they can earn enough infractions to be banned.

I want to point something out, I think most would agree but it's an important distinction. If you are going to have a political forum at all, and I think it's a good idea to keep it from spilling into other sections, then it has to be wild and wooly. Any attempt to moderate content will seem ideologically biased whether it is or not. What should be moderated is behavior not content.

The difference is if I say Bush/Obama cooks and eats orphans, that's content because they are public figures and fair game. Equally ok to critique product vendors. But it is NOT content when it is directed at other posters, it is interpersonal behavior. You can say Illegal Smile's assessment of Obamacare has the intellectual depth of a small plastic soap dish, because it's about my views and opinions. You cannot say Illegal Smile rapes sheep or imply that I rode a short bus to school because that would be about me, not about my ideas.

Public figures and all ideas - fair game. Each of us as humans - not fair game.

"Obama cooks and eats orphans" lol that's funny in a sick and mean way

I just witnessed some name calling on another post. the poster asked "who's the idiot who just said..." Knowing exactly who said it. That seems like more like a slight to me, than direct name calling, but not sure.

Rudeness has to be tolerated IMHO

If I'm driving down the street and someone yells "idiot" at me... I think I can handle that as well on the street as on an anonymous message board.

Yeah, but you never have to see that random idiot on the street ever again. RIU is a community where a lot of us are regulars and come here all the time. If you keep seeing the same people being rude to everyone, it wears on you and it gets old.
