3-Day old seedling - tap root coming out bottom of pot?

Hey all,

So my seedling is on Day 3, and her tap root is coming out of the bottom of the pot. It's kind of a shallow pot - the soil is probably about 10 cm deep. Here are some pictures:


You can see how I have it propped up for now. Will the tap root stop growing for a bit until I transplant it? Should I transplant it right away to a deeper pot?

I'm just a newb who doesnt want to make mistakes. Is this okay / normal?

transplant right now into a 4-6" pot(dont damage or stress the taproot).
you have left it a bit late but it should be ok with carefull handling.
try and cut the bottom of your container so the roots dont get damaged during transplant(dont just pull the soil and taproot out the container as the root will get caught by the small hole in the bottom of your container)
(use proper pots next time and start with 4" and pot up as the plant grows).

Man, start out with as big of a pot as your room can handle because transplanting sucks.

Transplant... if you can't right away sit the pot on a wet towel/toilet paper .... you don't want it to dry out and die..

well I just transplanted it now to a 5 gallon, lol.... it looks like such overkill right now, but i hope it works. The root tip was a slightly diff. colour thanthe root (a bit darker), but I hope she survives!!!

Good.. I'd also water more around the rim of the pot than right where the plant is that way the roots search for water, its better to look for water(promotes root growth), than sit in it.. Luck.

Too late, lol... I just gave the new soil a good watering, then made a hole, did the transplant, then didn't water any more.

y the fuck would you transplants it into a 5 galoonpot.. you only need a 1 gallon of soil per foot of plant... now its goin to be hard to move it arpund qnd everything.. and do yuo only have 1 plant// I RECOMEND PLANTING MORE... CUZ EVERYONE KNOW THAT WHEN YOU PLANTS ONLY ONE PLANTS IT IS 100% always male... that was a joke but seriosly plants like 10... i had 20 seedling and now i have 3 plants 1 male 2 female.. but that could be because this is my first grow and "i wish i knew what i know now".(rod stewart)

skyhighblazer, calm down brother. Newbie central is for newbies, who make mistakes. If you planted 20 seeds and got 3 plants, you definitely made some of your own mistakes.

Chipp, next time if you start in a cup, try cutting holes around the bottom edge of the cup and leave the bottom intact, you'll have less roots escaping that way. Just a suggestion. SHB is correct however, the larger the pot the larger the plant will try and grow. Watch its size, you might have issues if you dont have ample space.

Well stated Kush Guy, and it is good advice on the whole location in the cups. As for the relative plant size of course the more rooting medium the bigger the plant. I do however think that the 1 gal per foot of height rule of thumb is just that, a rule of thumb and a tad conservative.

For instance, this year I had a few plants which were sprouted, then into 4", 1 gal, 5 gal, and finally 15 gal containers. Each time they were transplanted they showed signs of root lock, yet they were below the threshold height of 1 foot per gal. It may be that I am using nursery containers, and the 5 and 15 gal size are clearly not a full 5 and 15 gal respectively. Who knows! I do know that at 4+ feet in height, the 5 gal containers would not be sufficient and they would be prone to tip over in a breeze. Just another opinion here...

I would agree gman, everything with indoor gardening is a "rule of thumb" every strain is different, every room is different, every grower is different. You have to always look at everything you are doing and try different things, if you grow by the book you will likely never find what works best in your situation.

oh yes u must transplant when you see the roots out the bottom of the pot..thats good cuz its growin like a weed...lol....

Just like everyone else said, transplant it now into a larger pot.

Oh, okay... I see you've already done that =) Good job, then.

Don't worry if you don't see any new growth above the soil for the next few days, as the plant is putting out new roots so all the growth is going on beneath the soil where you can't see it.

Just wanted to say thanks everybody, this is my first grow I did two autoflower turns out my first seed is a twin. Twin trunk its called, anyway I need to transplant my twins thanks again Shagg42.
