FINALLY! No more robo-calls from telemarketers and bill collectors!

I've been getting this prerecorded call lately. You know the ones where the voice comes on and says "we have an important message for soandso, if you are this person press 1 to hear this message. If you're not this person press 2", etc. Well, there's an option when you press 2 (because you're not the person they're looking for) to press another button if the person they're calling for isn't at that number. I've been pressing that damned button for weeks trying to get them to stop calling me, but there's no way to speak to a live person (calling the number that shows up on my caller ID results in a message that says "this number is not activated") and pressing the button doesn't seem to stop them from continuing to call.

Anyway, it's been a few days since I've gotten one of these calls (they used to call every hour or two) and I was starting to think maybe I'd finally been successful in my button-pushing...until I heard on the news this morning that the FCC has finally been successful in BANNING these types of calls altogether!

I sign up to companies such as that because I can make free entertainment out of them. I had an insurance company call me today asking for my name, I just spelled out 'C-H-E-E-S-E-Y D-O-R-I-T-O-S' and told them I was born in 1908, making me 101. They then said they wouldn't insure anyone over the age of 65, so they won't be ringing back.

the do not call registry only applies to telemarketers. This new ban is on ALL automated calls, unless you give express permission first.

Do not call doesn't apply to creditors, bill collectors, and the like. This new ban does.

Even the DNC doesn't keep telemarketers from calling you, so long as you're already a customer of the company (or one of their "affiliates).

Example: You have auto insurance from GEICO, and they call you to offer you a low rate on a homeowner's policy. They can do this even if you're signed up to the DNC registry, and there's really nothing you can do to stop them.

HA! That's actually what I've started doing, too. Tell them it's the wrong number so they'll stop calling. Of course, it usually takes a couple days for them to actually stop, but eventually they do.

ROFL thank GOD, I hated those new telemarketing techniques... the one that pisses me off are the people who call your works and ask "is the manager in?" and nothing else. Fucking restricted annoying numbers. I KNOW they want to ask the manager what type of copy and fax machines we use, I just know it...

I HATE those calls. "We have an important message for soandso--" obviously not important enough to merit a human on the other end of the phone.

Sometimes I get called with surveys, and I usually go ahead and participate if I'm not doing anything. The last guy was doing a survey for my cell phone service provider, and he called while I was taking hits from my bong, so I just continued on while he asked me his questions. He HAD to have heard the water bubbling. And there were a few times when I answered questions while holding in a hit.

Mostly I just look at the caller ID, and pick up and hang up without ever hearing anything. I just hate it when it rolls over to my voicemail and I sit there listening to their dialtone being recorded. And then have to get up and erase it. Stupid land line.

Or report the number to the FCC, since the caller is in violation of the new regulations.

That is, so long as the caller isn't a bank, insurer, telephone company, or debt collector. Even in those cases, the "robocall" must begin by identifying the company or entity of origin. if they don't, report them.
