A few years back I remember reading an article where they were interviewing a science corp in Atlanta Ga. In that case, in the context of the education theme, the owner of the corp tried using PHD college graduates from the USA but found that hiring just college kids from japan was far better. They had the math skills that the PHD math kids from the USA didn't. He tried the USA first but found they weren't up to the task.

This is indicative of what's happening today. Colleges are graduating kids... but at what REAL level of education?

One should not be afraid to encourage competition. If that foreigner squeaks you out... perhaps you need to pick up your game... Shutting the more qualified out is not a long term solution.

Those foreigners make the country stronger, not weaker.

I could not agree with you more, I've been talking about the "entitlement" factor for a few years now. No one wants to work for what they have. No one wants to start small and build up. No one appreciates the meaning of paying your dues anymore. All of these experiences in life are what make us unique and give us wisdom to pass on. I am concerned for the children of the future if they continue to look at life in a way that makes them believe they deserve things they've not earned. It's not just the kids though, shame on the parents and other adults that will throw a fit over their hamburger not being made right. Have you nothing more important to be upset about in life? Observers learn from this behavior and all it takes is one person behaving as if they are entitled, no matter what the situation, to make some feel like this behavior is okay. And then it snowballs. If you want to pass something on, let it be in a pay it forward mentality, that's contagious too! Be the example of what we want in this world and not what we all want to live without... You know, the more I think about it the more I see that where a person stands largely determines their views on this issue. People who had to get out there and scratch and claw their way to success largely think like myself and a few other people here. We think that people need to stop feeling so entitled and get out there and take responsibility for their lives. Others, feel that society is keeping them down and that life is unfair. These are clearly people who are struggling and see no way of making things better without help.

Although I often see poor people who take full responsibility for their lot, I see a lot more of them that think the way they do simply because they stand to benefit from income redistribution. If the same people won the lotto, they would be the first to protest when they saw the amount of taxes they would have to pay.

On another note. I own a business in Detroit and I see the worst of the worst. I see people who are for lack of another term, zombies. This is not an insult. What I mean is that sad as it is, many of the people I see are functioning on an intellectual level that is sub-human. These are people that can not speak their own native language, have zero regard for human life and have practically no higher reasoning skills. This is the result of generation after generation of ghetto life and living in chaos.

It was said earlier that they "don't know any better" and I'm sure these people don't. There is no way they could read a thread like this (assuming they can read) and understand any of the concepts being discussed. For people who are this far gone, it isn't reasonable to think they could possibly take responsibility for their own life. The question then becomes, what can we do about it.

I have many ideas of how to change this. But implementing such sweeping measures just wouldn't be plausible. So then the question becomes, who's responsibility is it to support these people. Is it right to tell people they must pay for the subsistence of these people but they have no right to insist on the terms of the arrangement?

If I were King, I would fly guys in from Israel to build urban farming communes and I would force people to work at assigned jobs. But of course we do not have a King and we do have bleeding heart Liberals and the ACLU to ensure these people have a right to be non-productive forever.

So for some, there is no hope what so ever. Maybe one day if we get rid of the Liberals we can help these people, but until that day comes the Libs will guarantee generation after generation of hopelessness.

BTW, the metaphor I like best is that while Liberals will always ensure a black man's right to sit at the lunch counter, Conservatives want to teach that man how to own the lunch counter.

So the summer after my junior year I took a statistics course at a community college. Just wanted to get it out of the way so I would have more free time during my final year. Anyways, my professor was also in charge of the math department. On one of his random tangents he started discussing the status of education in America, specifically mathematics. He said that in recent years this specific community college had to cancel 2 of their Calculus classes, as well as some other upper level math class every semester (I can't remember what class specifically). They also had to cancel one of their Pre-Calculus courses. Apparently, not enough students qualified/tested into these courses. Instead, the school discovered that they would have to open up 3 more classes of "Developmental Math" along with the 2 that were already provided. I asked him what exactly developmental math was and his explanation was that it even fell below college algebra. We are talking about basic mathematics here: multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, etc. were being taught to 18+ year olds.
I walked into a classroom for said class at the end of the semester to see the teacher erasing some problems she had written on the board.
I specifically remember seeing problems similar to this... 4x + 1 = 9 Solve for x
18+ year olds unable to do the most basic Algebra problems, stuff I am sure a lot of us learn in our early teens. Also, despite my previous conceptions, I assumed this class would be made up of almost entirely minorities/people from lower income areas (No, I am not racist, come live in Texas and go to a community college for a class or two and you will see why...). However, more than half of the students were white and/or were better dressed than myself with all of the *cough* essentials for a student - I Phone, Black Berry, etc. I honestly couldn't believe that this class was full of students who most likely attended a school in a middle class - upper class neighborhood.
Let's just say I definitely appreciate the education I have been provided ALOT more after seeing this.

Sad but true, I have seen the same thing. Part of the reason is that all teachers teach these days is tolerance, cultural sensitivity and other Liberal ideology.

IMO, the natural sciences and a few others are the only remaining areas of true education and the only ares where students actually have to use their head for more than wearing a stupid looking hat sideways. Everything else is just a bunch of Liberal nonsense designed to indoctrinate our youth.

If you tax something, you will get less of it. No, you ENCOURAGE it because of the service the foreigners (highly educated) provide.

Almost always a foreigner comes here to stay. This should be made as easy as possible. Talent, no matter the origin, should always be recruited as heavy as possible.

I'm still trying to figure out how it is we are going to create all these new jobs for Americans(while giving them to everyone else).......AND how my child will get his/her first car. When I was that age, so much job opportunity for the HS summer student. Look at who is working in the Walmarts, gas stations, grocery stores now.
It doesn't take much talent to perform so many of these jobs they are taking over either.

No one is stopping anyone from applying for jobs. Let the BEST qualified get the job. Period at the end of that sentence.

If there wasn't a need for foreign talent, they wouldn't be coming over halfway from around the world. Fact is, despite the feelings of the matter, they are better educated and their intelligence, dedication, and talent helps the USA overall.

Let the best qualified do the job. You want that high science job.... get a quality education.

BINGO!!!!! My point exactly..... our education system is failing us. The best and brightest are coming from overseas. That shouldn't be, but stopping them from coming over isn't the answer.

WTF? Let me help you understand NCLB.

The purpose of NCLB is to ensure that students reach a minimum standard and are not simply passed along through the system. They do this by making all students pass a proficiency exam. This includes proficiency in math and English and what not. There are no "lies" taught to the children except what teachers who don't know squat opine on - something a public servant has no business doing in the first place.

The reason teachers hate NCLB is because they have limited control over the student's success and don't believe the system is fair.

But the main point is that NCLB was created to solve the problem of poorly performing teachers, not to encourage it.

dude do you have kids is school? understand NCLB ha. we see the effects of it every day, that's why our kids are so F in dumb now. but your right it's doing it's job. as far as no lies being taught to our kids, that's why our kids believe that the US started slavery. our kids are told half truths and forced to think a certain way, so the government can control of how much they actually know. also if NCLB did so well why are we one of the dumbest country's? BTW i have had more then one teacher tell me they can't tell the hole truth about the things they teach for multiple reasons, but i know you have an answer for that to don't ya.
