I broke my res today. Not too happy about it. I was trying to drill a hole for tha thing that I explained earlier but apparently my res was not about to have it. So I'm going tomorrow to get another rubber washer and we'll see what happens. I guess I'm going to have to water by hand tomorrow. Maybe I'll get a new res that works better for me. I dunno... Input appreciated

hey church man,i like the set up bro, very stealthy and very clean and crisp,i was looking at your leaves and i think you have an indica dominant offspring which is good for your situation, but i would still put her to flower at 13 inches or so,just to be on the safe side, yeah it would affect your yield but i know you werent shooting for a pound in that thing, you can always FIM that girl to make her extra bushy, since you have adequate cooling for the lights burning wouldnt really be a problem, but i suggest you start now, that way she can recover quickly and switch the light schedule back to 18/6 so she could fill out more....dont be afraid my man she still has room to fill before she flowers, and everytime you FIM her it stunts the growth a lil bit while she fills in

thanks for the reply man, im' kinda stressin today. *resesvoir issues*

i think you're right about the indica dom. the little one hasn't done much growing as of late cause i've been fucking with the can too much. but i've gotta get the environment set before she takes off ya know?

i'm going to find some more info on fimming but i've heard good things. i'd much rather be safe then sorry and grow a short one this time around then have to somehow extend the top of my can to compensate for vertical growth.

the plant has been in flowering for a couple days. you think its ok to go back to veg? do i change the light schedule all at once or gradually?

also, i think i'm pretty set on the lucas formula. it is so intuitive and simple and i love it. i am very much so a numbers person and the lucas formula adds up nicely in my mind.

If i convert back to veg i could probably wait until growth is around 12" to start flowering. this is definately an option. i'm also considering just starting some pure indica seeds in there (imagine some widow or rhino). it seems like it'd be more peace of mind for me to know that my plant will only stretch a bit during flowering.

oh yeah.... the parents (the lil indica and the sativa tree) were started on flower around two and half weeks. the sativa pictured at around eight feet in the pic was less than 12 inches when put into flower. i'm apprehensive about vegging too much and then getting explosive growth in flowering because of the sativa genetics.

thanks a lot nikk for the reply and the train of thought that it provoked. do you think i'd be better off fimming or trying uncle ben's four top technique? i sort of like the idea of multiple tops, but this is my first grow so i like the idea of anything:joint:

i think fimming would be your best bet, because i topped my lil girl and i have the feeling she is going to stretch those cola's when she flowers, you see if you fim,all it does it stress the plant out enough to stop vertical growth but it promotes side branching,i dont really know the schematics as to why it works but it does, and if youre willing to try you know you CAN fim and top, you'll have to veg longer but you will end up with a wide canopy and at least 2 tops, but thats scary business....i'd just fim her a few times till she gets nice and busy...but short

tom is the man by the way,i personally follow ALL of his work, even if i cant afford the stuff he uses i still use his grows as a catalyst for what i would like to achieve

oh and i just checked, they recommend a 24 hour light schedule if you plan on fimming,i guess it helps the plant recover quicker and bush out

tom,

thanks for the compliment and the link. that really is a good guide and i'm going to be using it in the future.
i am wondering what you would do concerning my, uh, concerns... I'm worried about height (there's more written above in post 14 and 17) and am debating whether to use a technique like fimming or just resume what i am doing and just flower already.

wwtd?

nikk,

thanks a lot for getting back to me and looking up stuff on fimming. i did some searches too and it looks cool. i'm about to go see what your operation looks like....

i just finished trying to fix my res and it doesn't seem to be leaking! whoo! but the integrity of my resevoir has still been compromised and who knows how long this patch will hold. so, a resevoir goes onto my shopping list.

i mounted the fill level indicator <<(fancy name for some simple shit) and i'm going to mark it so i have a fill line. it works well and i can pour a bit of water straight into my drip pH test kit. before i had to lift the damn can off everytime i wanted to look inside the res. so far so good.

so now that my resevoir issue is temporarilily resolved, its time to fill it with water and nutes! i'm going to be following the lucas method of maintaining a healthy resevoir and nutrition levels. i'm using GH micro and bloom to flower with. Because I am using fluorescent light bulbs i'll be adding 5mL Micro and 10 mL Bloom per gallon of water in my res instead of the formula for HID lighting (0-8-16).

i went to the pharmacy at walmart and asked them for a little syringe without the needle in it. it was free and measure easily in tsp's (up to 1) and mL's (up to 5).

so..... i put seven gallons of water from the bath into my res and made a mark to indicate a full water level on the inside of the res. i also made two marks on the external level indicator (hahaha fancy names), one at seven gallons and the other at six gallons. this way i'll have an estimate of how much add on water i need to bring my res back to the "full" amount.

next, i found out that my tap water pH was around 8(horrible, i know) and had a ppm of 236 @ .5 conversion or EC of 0.472. I pulled out the micro and syringed (word?) out 35mL. stir the water. next came the bloom with 70 mL for my seven gallons. stir the water more. chill on it.... smoke a steamroller... bongsmilieand test that shit again. this time the results put a smile on my face:mrgreen:. the water had a pH of 5.9-6 and ppm of 820 or EC of 1.64.

as far as i know (and my knowledge only comes from reading and reading and reading), these numbers seem pretty good. I turned the bubbler on and will check again for change tomorrow. The lucas method seems pretty sweet and i shouldn't have to toy with pH and ppm that much at all, and if i do i'll buy water for $.29 at meijer...

i still don't know where i'm going to put this thing. i have two closets in my room. one is being used for clothes and the other has the apt air conditioner and water heater. i gets kinda cold in there at night but i think this is where the can is gonna end up. i'll take temp readings at night to see lows.

how cold is too cold for a plant? haha i know thats probably a question not often asked but these lights provide basically no heat. today my room was around 60F. after the can was lights on for seven hours it was low of 60 and high of 62 in there. really incredible system i've got here... so back to my original question! how cold is too cold? should i invest in a small heater for when i put this thing in the cold closet?

i am out of stuff to say and have some work to do for tomorrow so i'm out. wish you all well

one question,

once you fim, how long (i'm talking in length of new growth) before i can fim again? or i guess i could ask how many fims could i possible get with around ten or fifteen inches to work with?

sorry if it's oddly worded. i think funny

yesterday when i was fixing my res i put my water pump in a cup full of h2o2 and left it on FULL speed for a while. last night when i put the trash can away for the night i didn't even think of this. so...... this morning i have water on the floor. its not tooo bad, maybe a quarter gallon, but of course i'd rather not have any water! for now, i'm unplugging the water pump from the timer so that i can be around for the next watering schedule. i'll watch what happens, but i'm pretty sure the pump is pumping too much and that the drain isn't draining fast enough. i also think my drain has a small leak. so i'll plug that up and turn the pump down accordingly.

my thermometer also got water on it, in it, near it, whatever. its not working this morning which means that i don't know what last nights low temps were. i'll take it back to the store and tell them its defective or something...

overnight my pH didn't seem to move that much. its hard to tell for me cause i'm using the drips and watching for color change. its a wee bit difficult to be accurate with this tester, and fuck all if you're color blind. i'll need to invest in a proper pH and EC meter. for now what i think i'll do is have more than one little container to test water. this way i can test at night and leave those results out, and in the morning test again and physically compare the two. i'm also gonna call the water company and find out my water analysis...

plant looks alright at the moment. its green (haha thats the color i look for in my plants) but the leaf tips are pointing down. it definately had a rough day yesterday. on top of that, she had a pretty good flooding this morning. so i'm guessing things should be back to normal today or tomorrow. i'll post pics later today.

thanks for following along!

church man, usually it'll take 2-3 days before you notice new growth in between fim's,but the new growth would be explosive...as for the ppm e.c meter,i know a dude on here named roseman that really doesnt use em much, because as long as your water p.h is 5.8 it should be fine, it fluctuates to 7.0 naturally as the plant eats up the nutes(so in a way you want it to fluctuate)because the plants take up the nutes at different levels, just add the fresh p.h water instead of messing with the ph down all the time,it'll save you the head ache

yeah man,

i'm doing the lucas formula for fluoros. its 0-5-10mL micro and bloom. i shouldn't have to adjust my pH at all as long as i get it right when i initially mix up my nutes. ya gotta love the formula......

as for new growht with the fimming... by new growth do you mean vertical growth? i'm thinking that you do... while i'm waiting the three days for the "fim site" to recover will i still be experiencing vegetative growth underneath the fim site? will the plant still be growing anywhere that i didn't cut?

thanks for following this thread man i really appreciate having someone to bounce idea with.

yeah it'll explode all over, and every time the fim site heals do it again somewhere else, you could actually fim a few site at the same time and when they recover you gonna notice growth every where, especially along the branches, and i dont mean vertical growth i mean horizontal (it'll fill out the whole plant making it bushy)

hell yeah! i like the sound of that! i'm just gonna stay on my track. i'll flower this girl for as long as i can. i just put some ideas on paper and i think in the future i could have a rubbermaid for clones and vegging. if i time it right i could potentially have a harvest every 8 or 9 weeks...

I`ve seen alot of ppl address alot of stuff.Everything except the cold.Try to keep ya baby above 70.She`ll love ya 4 it..Also I`d offset your re res and gro.Pump up and let it drain back into res..that way if you`ve got res problems it`s not under your baby...Easier to get to...

that sounds like a plan,a perpetual harvest,nice!!
i wanted to buy a rubbermaid tub but them things cost like $130,too rich for my blood....lol

.We get those tubs at dollar general for about ten bucks.18 gal.Thats what i use for a res. Also I`m gonna make a cloner using one.All the plans are in the new high times.

nikk,

$130!!! where the fuck is your rubber made?? that's ridiculous....

drifter,

what about this....

i get an eighteen gallon tub. i cut one side out of it, just big enough so that my resevoir will slide into and out of it, but i leave enough of the bigger tub so that it still has structural support. i could keep the can on top of the 18 gal and my res inside the 18 gal. this way i can manage my res without touching the can. what do you think? i think its possible but i'm not sure of the stability of the 18 gal once i make that cut. with the space that i'm working with i don't have much room. i can lift the can vertically, but unless i find somewhere else for it there's really no way to seperate res and grow. i like this idea of sliding the res in and out beneath the can... i'll put some thought time to it....

Why not just make a wood frame for the can to sit on?
That way it will def hold it and you can still take in and out the rez without picking up the can
