Electricity costs for a 30-90 plant grow?

Hi all,

I’m interested in starting my own grow, but nervous about the electricity issue. I’m in CA and plan to do everything legally, but I hear that once the cops target your place, they’ll go in, seize everything, and throw you and sometimes the landlord in jail. I’m sure you get out after everything is cleared up, but by then the weed is gone (never to be gotten back) and your landlord wants to evict you.

I want to avoid that whole mess. I’m still waiting for my grow books to come in the mail, but I just wanted to get an idea of how much electricity will cost so I can get an idea of how much volume is appropriate for me. The rough goal is about 30-90 plants.

How much is electricity costing for your grow?

what lighting? how many? veg under mh or fl/cfl? how many hours on/off? what does electric cost per kw/h in your area?

these are just some of the questions you gotta figure out.....your question is IMPOSSIBLE to answer otherwise

Well the average cost of electricity in California is about 15 cents per KWH ( 1000, watt hours) which means if you run a 1000 watt HPS for 1 hour the electricity will cost you 15 cents. Ok so 30 plants can easily be grown 9 per 1000 watts so, you are gonna need 3600 watts or so. You will veg the plants first and depending on grow method may spend upwards of 8 weeks at 18 hours of lights on per day. so figure 18x 3600=64,800 watt hours or roughly 65KWH used per day. Multiply that by 15 cents and you get $9.75. Now when you flower your only going to be using the lights for only 12 hours, so 12 x 3600= 43,200 or about 44KWH multiply that by 15 cents and you get $6.60. Round up to the next whole dollar on both of those to account for fans and extras that draw a little power also. Ok so knowing that veg will cost $10 per day and flower will cost $7 we can get a rough average estimate on what a soil grow will cost in power to bring in a 30 plant crop assuming veg takes 45 days and flower takes 75. So veg is gonna cost $450 and flower is gonna cost $525 Figure an extra $240 for each monthly bill

To do 90 plants figure triple everything.

This is a ballpark figure, dont blame me if you get hit for more or less.

Thanks you helped me understand this very well. It looks like 30 plants is about the limit then (even those figures could pose a problem)
