They can search anything that is not closed, sealed, shut, locked, etc. The cops at least. I'm not sure what the school would do if you didnt allow them.

Schools and dorms are private property of the school and/or state... therefore the same rules don't always apply as if you owned a house.

there's never a need to keep a gun on you when you're living in a college dorm bro. if you ever need to protect yourself, you buy the gun when you need it and get rid of it asap. never stash something like that in college because they can search your room whenever they want to; during fire drills they'll look for something suspicious and if they find something incriminating the least bit... they will most likely have somebody come and search through your belongings. my point is though - use a gun (if you have to) when you need it and get rid of it as soon as the heat dies down.

That's a shitty situation on the whole man, sorry to hear it. Given that the terms of their search were false anyway (provided your gun was a few hundred miles away as you stated), that's a really rotten deal. It is good to see the school and the police taking the possible issue seriously, but it's too damn bad that 1) they had it wrong, and 2) the cops were fuck heads about it. I understand their need to keep themselves safe and to keep control of potentially hostile situations, but crap. They do get carried away, those guys.
Personally, I can see how the shell casing thing could happen though. Sometimes spent casings wind up in various weird places. I'm always pulling out a rifle shell by mistake when I go for a lighter or some chap stick or something.

I have been thinking though.... everyone that is bitching about "dirty cops".... what about when they are dirty in your favor???? the "dirtiest" cop I know (personally) is only "dirty" in the fact that he has kept me out of ALOT of trouble, many times it was things that could have cost him his position (chief) had anyone found out..... Is he still an "asshole pig"???
