Newbie with a few questions.

Hi everyone, I just started my first grow in soil and I still have a few questions.

When will I know when to add fertilizer, will my plants give me a sign?

Will a small ammount of fertilizer evaporated into the air help the plants, harm the plants, or do nothing at all?

Sorry for the newbie questions, but thanks for your help.

Don't give them nutes until they're about 3-4 weeks old.

i would wait about two weeks before feeding anykind of nutes to it.. and yes, sometimes the plant will let you know she is hungry.. growth will slow a little bit, and some of the leaves may start to turn a lil yellow.. also, start off with 1/4 strength the dose of whatever the manufacturer of your nutes says to use.. and slowly increase it up to full strength.. only feed them every other watering...
i don't know what you mean about evaporating nutes in the air... are you talking about adding nutes to a humidifier or something like that?

Thanks for the info, 7 of them have already been in the dirt for 11 days so I guess I should start slowly in a few days.

The vaporizer I bought is a warm mist vaporizer. It has a little cup where the warm mist vents for vapor rub & stuff. I was thinking of using that little cup for the fertilizer. So it wouldn't be going through the evaporator, but the fertilizer would still be evaporated in with the mist/steam.

I'm using Foxfarm Ocean Forrest Potting Soil. When I mixed the pots (33% perlite & 66% soil) I also mixed in with each 5 gallon pot, 2 teaspoons of blood meal (12-0-0) & 2 teaspoons of bone meal (0-10-0).

Thanks for the info on the fertilizer, you just saved me time & trouble.

remember to set the ph of the water you are using, and the fertilizer mixture needs ph adjusting too...

get the testing drops at a local pet shop, or a digital ph meter at a local hydro store...

the little baby leaves will start turning a little yellow, when that happens you can start feeding. and as far as fertilizing, remember 1/2 strength for the first two feedings....

FFOF has nutrients in it... depending on how much you water it can last up to a month or so...

I'm on top of the PH already and I'm learning about watering (how much is too much/not enough, not getting leaves wet, etc...).

Thanks for the info on the fertilizer though. It had just dawned on me today that I don't know when to start adding.

Hi again everyone. I appreciate all the help I've gotten so far, but I have a few more questions about 2 of my plants.

The first pic is of the purple passion. I just got her Sunday. She came in a cube so I transplanted her the same day. The dirt was already moist because I had used it the night before to keep a clipping alive.

On Sunday the water meter read a 5 on a 1 to 10 scale, so I didn't water her. The next day she was a little droopy and the meter read a 3.5 (dry). I didn't know if she was under or over watered so I gave her a cup of water. Yesterday she was drooping a little worse & the meter once again read 3.5 (dry), so I tried another cup of water. This morning she looked like this.

I think I overwatered her so I'm going to let her dry out for a couple of days. Can anyone confirm that this is the right way to go?

And more importantly, since plants droop for both under & over watering, how do I tell the difference in the future?

The next plant is an Opium, I got her 12 days ago and transplanted the same day. She's been doing fine, but this morning 2 of her bottom leaves were really light green. Not really yellow, just kinda washed out of color.

One leaf has some damage. I think that was from accidentally getting it wet during a watering or two.

I'm using Foxfarm Ocean Forrest Potting soil (1/3 perlite & 2/3 soil) and I mixed 2 table spoons of blood meal (12-0-0) and 2 of bone meal (0-10-0) in with each 5 gallon pot. And I have a 400w MH hung at 30" from the top of the pots.

Can she need nutes already or is this something different?

Thanks, but I already posted the question this morning. For some reason I can't seem to get any answers or even opinions on this. And I can't wait much longer to water my plants.

Well based on this , because Ocean Forrest already has bone & blood meal in it and is known to be "to hot" for seedlings and clones and you added more to it,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,if they were mine I would transplant them into a more young plant friendly soil like light warrior or happy frog and have the soil be just barely moist, as I'm not sure at this stage they can survive in that hot soil ???

I would not add any nutes for at least 3 to 5 weeks and only pay attention to the new growth the burnt leaves will probably die off, let them do naturally don't pick em :bigjoint:

that is what I would do if they were mine but feel free to get ideas from others

Thanks, I had no idea the the Foxfarm Ocean Forrest was considered to strong for young plants. The small Purple Passion that I just planted is the only one that I've really had big problems with. I'm gonna prop up her leaves and let the dirt dry out & pray. I can't afford to buy more dirt or another pot. I might have to flower after only 30 days as it is (first grow & money is tight).

On the Opium that's more established, is the light green color a sign of root burn? (I can't seem to find info on what light green color means anywhere)

I have another Opium growing in same soil mix and that one shows no signs of anything being wrong.

Sorry, I'm using a $20 cam hooked up to the computer to take pics. It's all I can afford till my first harvest.

The 2 close-ups are the 2 leaves. This cheap cam wont pic up the color shades very well.

In the following post it resembles the Nitrate - Ammonium problem pic. (about 8 pics from the top)
